Giardia Concerns! Input please... I bought my 3 month old puppy Nyla at a local yorkie breeder, 1 week and 3 day ago. Ever since I got her she has had diahrea and mucus looking feces. I took her to the vet and returned with a feces sample, it was positive for Giardia. I met with the breeder and she gave my pup medicine (Fenbendazole) and to give her .8ml/cc once daily for 7 days, then to repeat in 2 weeks. It's been about three days of using the medicine now. I pick up the feces rite away after she goes and wipe he bum, she still drags her bum across the carpet. She eats 3 times a day little amount everytime. I'm feeding her (Nutra Ultra puppy w/ some rice mixed in) Should I try another source of food while she is sick?? The smell is HORRIBLE and she goes about 10x a day. I'm worried the medicine the breeder gave me isn't the rite stuff. I wanna believe her sine she takes care of yorkie's all day everyday but i'm not sure. Please let me know what ya'll think, and feel free to ask questions! thankx everyone! |
I think you need to not give what the breeder told you and go back to the vet and do what he says. 10 times a day is very very not normal and she is probably dehydrated. |
If you took her to the Vet and had the fecal done, why didn't the Vet give you the medication? It can take a long time to get rid of Giardia. Just make sure yoy clean every thing real good with bleach where ever she has pooped. I know this be done on carpet, but do the best you can. |

She drinks water all day, not just when she eats. She is very playful and takes normal puppy naps daily inbetween playtimes. |

she has actually only gone poop 4 times today so the medicine must be helping?? it goes back n forth between mushy/mucus to formed wet poop... |
I would take her back to the Vet have the Vet prescribe her medicine and not deal with what the breeder says. Once Georgie came home with me anytime I felt something wasn't right it was off to the Vet. Good luck and keep us posted. |
@Georgiesmomma I will be taking her to vet again, beacause i'm sorta schetched out by the breeder and her knowledge. I feel so bad for Nyla always having me to wipe her bum and and clean her... thanks for the advice! |
@lovetodream88 I will be taking her to the vet (a different one) cuz the one I went to treated me with no respect... and she drinks water throughout the day but has lost some weight since I got her. @Txvicki I'm using the (clorox wipes) after i clean up her poop on the carpet but i do need lysol cuz my place smells like her poop and scented sprays... is it possible that my boyfriend and I can have sick feeling from her issue?? |

I went through garadia AND bacteria (in their gut) with all 3of mine back in July. My vet put them all on metronidizole. Giardia is a very though parasite to get rid of. It took a month before it was gone. |

We went to a new vet! So, the vet is much more knowledgable, kind and caring. She said that we were giving her the right medicine (that the breeder gave us) but we just got a new prescription of it (Panacur) just incase the medicine I recieved from the breeder was old or had been exposed to heat or cold especially since I live in Southern California where we are seeing 100+ degree weather; and also just incase she has another common parasite she prescibed (Albon) which shld help fight any other possible parasite as well as help the existing giardia... Other good news, Nyla is a healthy puppy!! And time will tell with this evil bug :) |

Wow! i give you props for dealing with all the dogs at the same time! I think i'd lose my sanity! :p and we are feeding Nyla Nutra Ultra dog food and her tummy seems to agree with it besides the giardia acting up.. the meds the vet put her on shld cleanse her and we will do another fecal exam after the treatment.. |
I am glad you have found a Vet that you like. Truly a good Vet is worth the money. Buster had Giardia and Coccidia when I first got him. He took a couple of months and treatments to get rid of all the parasites. It is good that you are cleaning up afterwards I always rinse the area with water after I have cleaned because I worry about Buster getting the cleaning products on his paws and licking them and getting sick. I also like the Shark steam mop because I feel it sanitizes without chemicals. I also put Buster on a probiotic to help firm things up. I use Jarrow Formulas : Pet Dophilus Good luck with getting rid of the parasites. |
Glad your little one is doing better. To clean the odor from the air, I mix a 5-10% solution of bleach and water in a spray bottle, shake to mix it, then I spay a dish or hand towel till slightly damp. Then I go through the house waving the towel around. It also removes offensive perfumes and some allergens. The bleach smell disappears after a few minutes. You can use this solution on the rug. Rugs are made at extremely high temps to set the color, but test a small area in a closet first. I spilled straight bleach on my wall to wall carpet... it never left a mark! |

Sorry the last post i quoted the wrong person and didn't revise what I typed!! Quote:
Luckly, Nyla hasn't wanted to lick her back feet after i sanitize them.. cuz she will step into her poop sometimes and ill have to rub them with the wipes..I tried the baby wipes but then thought (they don't help with sanitizing!) My place is all carpet beside the kitchen and bathrooms so ill definitely be having a carpet cleaner over here, but I don't wanna too soon cuz she might keep pooping on carpet sometimes??? or should I do it soon... @kjc The vet tought she may have Coccidia, i think thats why we are giving her the another medicine besides (panacur)..i do need to get bleach i have been just using the clorox wipes to sanitize. That's probly why my boyfriend and I have had sysmptoms of gas and stomach issues. I will try the water-bleach solution...THANKS! |
