Is my puppy eating enough? At 6 months old, and just barely 3 pounds, does this mean he is too small or underweight? He is pretty bony, but after a trip to the vet for check ups and shots he is perfectly healthy. I don't have him on a schedule, and his diet is just Acana small breed puppy. His kibble is in his bowl and he has access to it all day. I would like some diet tips. Should he be on a schedule, and should he be getting more than just kibble? The reason his food is left out is because I can't stand the thought of him being hungry during the day :/ |
Everyone has their opinion on the food, but with your baby being only 3 pounds, I would leave it out for him, and always fresh water. |
I will continue doing that, and I have also started adding some stuff, like plain boiled rice mixed with a small bit of soft food. He enjoys it and I would like him to gain a bit of weight so it seems to work out :) |
Georgie is 7 years old and barely weighs 4lbs. I think it depends on their body frame. I am sure he isn't underweight especially since his check-up went well. At his size I would just leave food out all day. Georgie lets us know when he is hungry now but when he was younger he always had access to food. Also try adding some plain yogurt with his kibble. It's great for them. I wouldn't leave that out all day but maybe feed him that in the morning and free feed dry kibble through out the day. |
It's fine to leave kibble out for him, just measure the amount per day that you put in the bowl so you can tell exactly how much he is eating. I feed mine kibble mixed with canned food and a bit of water twice a day, and leave a bowl of kibble out throughout the day, just in case they get hungry. The amount to feed by weight, age and/or breed is listed on the package of food. Some will eat more, some less, but it's a good place to start to see how much he should be eating. More active pups may require more. Also, at 6 months, he may have trouble eating the kibble as that's also the time they can be losing their baby teeth. He may do better eating a softer food, or offer him kibble softened with warm water, to see if he can eat more. |
When Joel was a baby I had his food out at all times and he would barely eat, and for some reason when I put him on a schedule he eats more than ever. Now he eats more in one day than he did in 3 days,lol It seems like they'll eat more if its always out, but a schedule worked better for Joel |
