Scary black splotches on Luma.

Luma has been having skin issues since I took her off TOTW due to salmonella concerns. She had tiny black dots that looked like scabs, in random places. I took her to the vet in May and they gave her an antibiotic which did not help.

After her spay the little black dots got worse and were all over her incision site, but I thought it was just from her scratching it or something. They appeared on the backs of her legs and were big scabs that she would bite off and her skin would be bloody.

I have now noticed two big black splotches on her skin. They are MUCH darker in person than the pics are showing. She has one near her left shoulder blade and one on her left side, above her thigh.

Has anyone seen these on their own babies? She is itchy and miserable, and these dark spots are scaring me. I'm going to bring her in early on in the week.

Poor baby! I'm not sure what they are, but I'm hoping the vet can figure it out!! Give Luma a big hug and kiss from me, Sophia, and Brody!!

My yorkie has those too. Mine has a problem with chewing her skin due to allergies and she gets those after her scabs fall off. Its just here the hair starts to grow back.

I am sorry but I don't have a clue either. But I am curious now to see what others say. Did you show the vet? What did he say? Could it be something to do with allergies? What are you feeding her now? I don't know. Just guessing.

Really? That is comforting to know. She did have a big scab where the shoulder spot was. So is it going to be a scar forever now? Hope not...

I havent seen a vet yet. It is possible it is allergies. We've had probs with her skin for a while now. We went from Chicken soup to TOTW to Fromm to what shes on now, acana pacifica. I am thinking of trying a grain free fromm or canine caviar kibble.

Is she allergic to something in particular? Is that why you have changed foods? Could be one specific ingredient or something.

Max had similar spots on his undercarriage last year and I took him to the vet twice. Two doctors deemed them an allergic reaction of some kind and gave us antibiotics that cleared them up right away.

I think it might be some kind of grass allergy, maybe Bermuda grass. Since I don't want Max on antibiotics several times a year, I tried organic coconut oil which has properties like Neosporin. It cleared the spots up. I like Nutiva brand, which I buy at the Vitamin Shoppe.

The spots do need to be taken of because they can turn into a staph infection.

The breeder had her on chicken soup when I brought her home. She turned her nose up at it. We got totw because it was grain free and she liked it. Then diamond had the salmonella drama. We tried Fromm Gold puppy and I noticed for the first time she was itching.It is not grain free so I assummed it was grains giving her problems. So then we went to acana grain free but she got even worse.

I dont really know what to do anymore. I thought about asking the vet about food trials and allergy testing but from what Ive heard here on YT its a big waste of time and money :(

Max doesn't have any scars from the spots. They dried up and fell off like a scab.

Sorry for the multiple posts: Max doesn't have any food problems, so I am confident that it is an environmental allergy, which is much more common.

Have you thought about home cooking?

I would look into trying the coconut oil for the spots like Kristin suggested. It can't hurt. Then if it don't work, I would see the vet.

Aww, thanks Kristin! She has been rockin' the messy 'do this lazy weekend. Coconut oil is another thing I'm gonna ask the vet about. She had antibiotics, as well as benadryl, for this once and I saw aboslutely no improvement. :(

Gabby was practically covered in them when we got her. The vet said it was because she's had allergic dermatitis for so long. He put her on some med for it, and her itchiness is better but the black spots haven't lessened. Her hair is so light and thin that you can see them up close.

I havent considered home cooking, no. Could I buy recipes from a website or ask the vet for one? It seems like a lot of work, and I don't really cook for myself, but Luma is totally worth it. It makes me sad when she tries to bite and scratch at herself. I'm gonna pick up some socks for her so she won't get an infection.
