eye gunk My mokie has some eye gunk stuck in his fur under his eye. He doesn't like me messing with it. Today while giving him a bath I tried to soften it with water but he fought me. Is there any way to soften and remove the gunk? |
I usually use a baby wipe, just keep wiping at it till it feels soft, then finish removing it with a tiny flea comb. |
You can use sterile eye wash, I drip it on and let it set for a while, then check it and apply more if needed. Or you could use an opthalmic ointment, either antibiotic or a plain artificial tears ointment. Ointments will stay moist longer to help soften the gunk with less frequent applications. It can be painful as the hairs in that tender area tend to get ripped out if you try to comb the gunk out before it's softened up. |

Oliver sees me with a wipe and his wee comb and he "assumes the position" Chin out, eyes closed and he sits very still til I'm done. |

Thanks for the advice the wipe and flea comb worked. He fought a little bit, but did well. I gave him two treats for doing a good job. |
I clean my two's eyes weekly with a flea comb when they get their baths. The water softens up the gunk and then I just comb it carefully away from their eyes. This seems to keep their eyes clean and if I see some before their baths, I just pick it out with my fingers :D I love my babies, eye boogers and all! :p |

I soften the gunk with water too then remove it with a comb. My two seem to actually like this part of pampering. I think that gunk itches and pulls and they actually find relief having it cleaned regularly. If you are patient and let it soften before you comb it, I think your baby will learn to tolerate it just fine. |

It's so funny to be still buying baby wipes when my youngest is 17:laugh: A lady in Walmart asked me one time how old my baby was when she saw the wipes in my cart and laughed so hard when I told her:laugh: |
I use water to make it soft when there is a lot of gunk and just pick at it with my fingers. Ahi is used to my fussing with her.lol She thinks it's a treat because she tries so hard to eat it off my fingers.:rolleyes: gross.. Quote:

One thing though, by trying it on myself, I feel much more confident using it on my dogs knowing it's not going to hurt them.... instead of wondering and worrying. I know they pick up on stuff like that from me. So now I can pass on my nice, calm feelings and not be a nervous wreck! They all did pretty good while I was working on them, except Finny who kept trying to lick the wipe, lol! |
Pet stores sell washes specifically for this purpose. I just wet tissue or cotton ball with it and the gunk washes right off. However, this is a short term solution. There was a thread on yt about this and I took the advise of a member and switched my baby's food to all natural, with none of the bad stuff. Guess what? No more eye gunk. |
I was skeptical for a while, but ever since i started feeding Baci grain free food, he's been scratching less and doesn't have any eye gunk anymore. He seems to digest it better as well...poops are smaller, more solid and have no scent. I have become a beliver, at least for Baci. I realize eye gunk may have multiple origins depending on the pup, but for my little guy, apparently it's a grain allergy of some kind. |
I clean their eye goop & brush their teeth everyday. If you leave it there, it gets caked on & it gets very hard to remove. During bath time would be best after shampooing, as the water would have softened it. |

LOL My youngest is 32...wihch is amazing since I'm only 26...bwahahahahah I just use water and a 2-sided teeny comb...either during their bath or just with a little face washing after a meal. I use the wide side to detangle muzzle hair and the fine side to remove the goobers after any tangles are out. But, the wipes are very handy for lots of stuff...and good to just to keep in your car...in case...I don't like that alcohol 'goo' in the bottles everyone uses now. My oldest is 36 and he was just telling someone, after he offered them a baby wipe to clean their hands, how weird it seems that he still carries baby wipes around even though his daughter is...12...lol |
What kind of baby wipes are all of you using.?There is so many. Some of the natural ones have aloe in them |
I get a clean wash cloth, wet it with warm water and let Dinky bury his face in ti. Sometimes he resists a bit, but he usually likes it. the gunk softens and I can wipe it off. |

Exactly what Michelle does, is what I do with Jack and now Izzy. |
OMG! I bought the Clorox wipes for surfaces, and before I put them away my DH grabbed one and began wiping his face and neck off with one! I use mostly generic type wipes for faces and butts. |
I have the eye gunk issues and my oldest (15) gets gunk that is black like tar. Just was at the vet and he said not to be concerned, the little hairs cause irritation and to use a cotton ball with warm water to soften. I use a flea comb to help get it removed also. They are all used to the routine now and tolerate the process. |

He's in full coat, but some of the long hairs find their way into his eyes and it becomes a tangled, sticky mess overnight. These last two days have been so much better. I just ask my vet for the eye ointment for occassional use and he sells it to me. Just the plain, non-steroidal kind. |
Cleaning their eyes I went to walgreens and bought a soft toothbrush and when I bathe Charlie I just hold his head and gently brush under his eyes, with baby shampoo and water... I dont want to take the chance of getting anything in his eyes that might burn - it works great!! Interestingly, I just changed his dog food and his eyes are watery and gunky after a week of this new food. I'm at a loss for what food is best for him, he either doesn't like them or he has a reaction - scratchy skin and now eye problems. I am back to the food " drawing board" |
Just use water to soften it. |

my suggestions are the most natural diet you can find or raw and filtered water. No gunk in my doggies eyes |

Also, most pet stores allow returns if your dog does not like the food. Ask for store policies. You may be able to try different foods this way. Just be careful and allow extra time for getting used to a food before writing it off. Also, never try new food cold. Always start off by mixing with old food then slowly switch. |
Such good mommies here! :) I do the same thing with the wipes & comb...Jaxson is getting better at staying still & just accepting it. |
