Corn cobs? Thor somehow manages to be a finicky glutton. Anything rotten in the streets is desirable. Dog food, no. Filet mignon, if cut into tiny little pieces, yes. If it's too big for him to eat in under a minute, no. I have a lot of trouble finding things for self entertainment, since bones generally do not fall into the < 1 minute consumables category. I used to give him flossies after I boiled them soft, but he didn't really seem to be chewing them at that point. I went to a picnic with him last weekend and he made off with maybe 1/5 of a cob of corn. He ate the corn and kept right on chewing. Since it was cooked all the way through, he was able to eat the entire thing. He pooped just fine over the next few days, all though way, way more poop than usual. I tried giving him another piece last night, and he happily chewed his way through the entire thing. Still seems fine, still pooping healthy, still way more poop than usual. Does this seem reasonable? Obviously if it's small enough, it's a choking hazard, but the corn cob basically has no nutrition, right? :confused: |
I've read corn cobs can be an intestinal obstruction for dogs but of course don't know how true it is. Might check it out on the 'net to see what you think. |
You need to investigate this further....I have hears the cob is a definate NO-NO for dogs to eat....bad at causing intestinal obstruction. I have never thought about giving them cobs..... |
I agree with the others. They can & often do cause a blockage. |
He ate the whole cob? Core and all? What about interactive toys with soft treats in them? Well I think the "ball" kind that you have to roll and the treats fall out, or the ones where they have to paw at the shapes to uncover the treats. I got the Kong for Uni and put a treat in there. After she ate the part outside and realized she couldn't get to the inner piece she walked away. She did like this bacon flavored thing I found a Walmart. I forget what it's called but it's in the shape of a dog paw (the shaped part is plastic) and the edible part is filled in with the edible bacon-like stuff. It was about $3 bucks. It's similar to this but it's smaller and paw shaped. It's by Hartz apparently, don't know how good that company is :rolleyes: but it says it's from the US and the materials originate from the US. |
Yikes! Okay, I guess not such a great idea. Thor does have several toys and brain teasers, but again, I have to sit with him and encourage him to work on it until he has it down cold, at which point, it's five minutes of entertainment. Still fun, but not something he'll do on his own. Kongs, fuggedaboudit. He won't even lick dog-flavored frosting out of one. |

He can be quite a challenging little guy. I got this new bath mat with a very heavy, twisty yarn texture. I sprinkled some little chicken strips on it, and he worked that mat for quite a while. It was pretty hilarious, because *I* could see the chicken perfectly, but I guess the color and the rugginess hid it from him, and he was snorfling like crazy. I left him alone with it, and came back to no chicken and a pee stain on the mat. He does like to lick his front paws clean, but that makes me feel guilty, like he's Lady Macbeth or something. |

Now don't stay on little Thor's case too much. I have always thought he was such a cutie. He's just being a boy and a yorkie boy at that. Dudley can be something else too. But, you gotta love them. Nothin more cute than these yorkie babies. |
Yeah, he is a doll. :) Maybe I should get him his own bath mat. He was totally into it. I really don't want to encourage him to potty creatively, though. |
Oh, Thor. I always love to read of your stories of the little guy. He's got such a personality, and he's so lucky to have you. You are an awesome trainer and always working on making him happier. :) As for corn cobs, I don't think it's the best "treat". I'm pretty sure I've also read they can cause obstructions. My moms dog used to eat them all the time, but, well, my mom and step-dad were not good dog owners, LOL... |
