Primal pet food raw nuggets Does none have experience with this food? I feed Bailey Orijen, but was thinking of splitting a nugget and giving it to her during the day. |
Toki tried Primal's "Starter Pak" which has 3 1-ounce nuggets of 4 different proteins (chicken, duck, beef, lamb) when we were choosing a raw brand. She seemed to enjoy them all a lot! I also have gotten a couple of samples from my pet store of their freeze-dried raw as well. If you email their company for more information, request some coupons. They sent me a stack of five coupons for $2/$3 dollars off their frozen raw a couple weeks ago. |
Do you still use the raw food? I don't want to completely put Bailey on raw, just supplement her dry food diet. She is on Orijen and loves it. Any suggestions on the amount of raw I should supplement with? |
We *usually* do 1/2 raw, 1/2 kibble. One in the AM and the other in the PM. I would just be sure to cut back on the Orijen kibble accordingly if you're trying to maintain the same weight. If you want a gradual weight gain, only cut back a little bit of the kibble. I feed Toki about 110-140 calories worth of premade raw (depending on calorie content in 2 oz of a formula) a day and how ever many calories are left dictates how much kibble she gets in the evenings. I do a little more or less depending on how active she is. You'll have to play around with the amounts! We are currently doing NV raw bites and Stella & Chewys for our raw. |
Maybe you can try giving her half a nugget broken up throughout the day as a treat. I'm sure she'll love it! |
Do you happen to know how many calories a 5 pound yorkie should eat? That way I can see how much dry kibble she will get. I think I'll start with your suggestion to feed her one nugget throughout the day. I know she'll love it. |
Or half nugget...I didn't read your post carefully. |
Dog Food Calculator At 5 pounds and a typical activity level, an adult yorkie needs 204 or ~200 calories a day. If you have a puppy, they could require as much as 2x that amount if they are a younger puppy or only slightly more if they are closer to full grown. I believe that most 1 oz Primal nuggets are 40 to 65 calories each depending on which variety you choose. So if you give just 1/2 a nugget, that's only 20-33 calories. I'd probably feed close to the lower end of whatever Orijen recommends for that specific weight and go from there based on how much the weight changes! What formulas are you interested in trying? Also I was looking into Orijen/Acana for Toki! How does your pup do on the Orijen? I'm concerned it may be too rich for Toki but I might just have to feed a smaller amount. |
I was leaning towards the lamb, duck, or quail. Bailey is allergic to beef. We love the Orijen. When transitioning, she had a few loose stools, but now she has 1 or 2 hard stools daily. Also, they are small. She used to be a grazer and now she devours the Orijen. We love that it has glucosamine, omega 6 and 3. We do add a few drops of the Grizzly Salmon Oil to her food, which she also loves. Her coat is so lustrous and soft ever since she's been in the Orijen. We are very happy with it and so is bailey. |
I think that duck is Toki's favorite protein! Sorry I'm kinda derailing your thread but how much Orijen do you feed Bailey? And which variety is she on? I just like to hear other people's experiences! |
No problem. This is what this forum is for. I alternate between the Orijen 6 fish and the adult formula. I feed her 2/3 cups per day. 1/3 in the morning and 1/3 in the late afternoon. I put a couple of drops of the salmon oil in each serving. She gets several treats during the day. |
