Should Bailey have a Leptospirosis vaccine? Bailey is 5 months old and up to date on all his shots. The vet offered a Leptospirosis vaccine and said it was up to me if I wanted him to have it. She said I would have to stay for there for a half hour after the shot to make sure he had no complications. This worried me so I told her I would have to research it and make a decision. I've done a little research but I am still on the fence whether or not to have it done. |
Some say yes and others say no. Personally Georgie does not get the Lepto vaccine. He got it one time when he was about 4 and he was very lethargic afterwards unlike any other vaccine. I decided then he wouldn't get it again. |
Mine do not get it. My late Lizzie got it one time and she was sick for 3 day's I thought we were going to loose her. |
I don't do it. Jackson had a horrible terrible reaction to it as a 12 week old, so it's on file for him to NEVER receive it. |
If there is a low risk for contacting the disease in your area, then I wouldnt give it. That vaccine is frequently responsible for adverse reactions in many dogs, especially toy breeds....if the disease is not a major concern in your area, the risk outweighs the benefit. |
Tibbe is overdue his "booster" and I am so scared to let him have it! We live in the DFW area and West Nile virus is really rampant so I guess we have a lot of mosquitos and he is out several times a day pottying and playing but never around standing water or other dogs except any that would come down the alley or next door. He didn't have a reaction when he got his after I first got him but I didn't belong to YT and know all the things I know now. Are titers really reliable? What if the titer test is done wrong or is compromised or something? Have to balance those worries with living in high mosquito area and awful consequences of giving him the vax booster. I am in the same place you are except Tibbe hopefully has some resistance from his first dose. I'm so scared either way. I had a dog die of lepto in the '70's and never want to ever see that horror again! |
Thanks for your input. I just spent the last hour reading up on it again. I live in Michigan in the suburbs..so I don't know what the risk is here. I have a lot to think about. I had my last dog Dabny for almost 20 years and he never had that vaccine. I would just hate for Bailey to have a bad reaction. Thanks again everyone for the advice! |
I'm pretty sure that Michigan has a high risk. You could PM Ellie May and ask her about it as she is also from Michigan. We have a moderate to high risk here and we no longer give this vaccine. |
I think you need to see if you have Lepto in your area or not. My mom had a goat die of it so Callie and my moms yorkie Sammy definitely get it and have had no problems. |
My vet will not even give Toby the vaccine because they said the risk of complications from it is too high, and they have had more die from the vaccine then from the actual lepto. I was told by my breeder that I should give it to Toby, but my vet said absolutely not. |
Daisy gets it....we've had no problems |
Our furbabies have had the lepto vaccination with no side effects. Both of my children have small dogs as well and they have also had the vaccine--no side effects for them, either. Good luck! |
A lot of vets usually don't give it to small breeds...I don't have them get it. They also don't get the lyme disease shot. I had one of my dogs get it and she had a really bad reaction to it..almost lost her.,...the vet NEVER told me that they could have a reaction to this shot...had I known that...she wouldn't have gotten it...Don't go to that vet anymore |
Thanks for all the great feedback. I am still so undecided. I'm going to have to really think about this. The thought of him getting sick from the shot is scary...but then again so is Leptospirosis! I don't think I worried this much about my kids getting their school shots!! |
Both mine have had it the past 2 years.. this year there have been 2 dogs die because of lepto.. so I figured better safe than sorry. Both dogs had no reaction and no issues... |
