Heartgaurd Hello im new here and was wondering if it is ok to give my three month old three pound yorkie a entire heartgaurd pill for 0-25 pounds |
Heartguard requires a prescription and a heartworm test before the initial dose, did your vet tell you the dosage amount when he did the blood work and prescribed it for your baby? |
she went to the vet yesterday for routine vaccines and her dr told she needed to start on heart worm prevenitive medication but no blood test was ever done only test she had done was a fecal exam two weeks ago which came back negitive |
yes , she should definetly go to the vet first and get a heartworm test. it made me too nervous to give my oscar(4 lbs when i brought him home) those big heartguard chewies so i kept him on the revolution 0-5 lbs that the breeder was giving. He is still on it to this day |
Since this is a puppy. Vet's usually don't do a heart worm test. Puppies are usually started on Preventive at about 10-12 weeks old. Then at a year of age they have a HW Test with anual Vacinations at 1 year age. |
You cannot break heartguard in half you have to give them the whole thing. I am not a fan of heartguard for small dogs and would look in to interceptor that breaks it up a little better by weight. |
My Trinket was 1.89 pounds at 10 weeks old. The vet put her on Revolution, which is a topical application. Just put it between the shoulder blades. Heartguard is very big. She could never eat it all. |
I was concerned about the same thing. My vet did a fecal exam came back she had to be on medicine for 7 days, went back after that with another fecal sample, that one came back clear, she then wanted me to start her on Heartgard, I think she was 12 weeks old at time. When I saw the chewable tablet I was concerned she wouldn't eat the whole thing at the same time also. But turned out she loved it!! Its beef flavored and soft, gave her her second Heartgard tablet yesterday, second month, she even licks the floor for crumbs now. She had no problems with it at all. |
Heartworm tests aren't done on young puppies. My vet told me I can break it up into pieces so long as he gets all the pieces. |

Cali is 4.2 pounds. We use Revolution. |
1800petmeds is out of Interceptor. As far as I know, the word is Novartis is projecting it to be back at the end of the year. A lot of people have had to switch... No heartworm tests for very young pups. Just start prevention. The whole chew should be given. |

I have to break Tibbe's Heartguard into 2 pieces as his mouth is too small to hold that big piece but he gladly wolfs both down and wants more! I'm sooooo glad he likes it. He's been on it for 2 mos. now and started on it when he was still having some GI problems but I thankfully have seen no ill effects giving him the whole dose just as prescribed! |
Heartguard! The vet told me to start Jaxson my 3lb 3month old male yorkie on heart guard & mark it on the calendar so every month on the same day give it to him! I cut the heart guard chewie up & gave it to him after we got home from the vet. He was happy & running around like normal. He had a full workup though cause I wanted to make sure he was healthy & he was so as long as your vet says it's a-okay to give him the whole chewie then I see no problem. :) Good luck! |
My two are on Heartgaurd and love it. I just break the chews up into four pieces and give them to them. They think they are treats! |
I was told that the plant that makes sentinel and interceptor will open in Sept or Oct. |

I have given Raley Heartgard since he was about 14 weeks old. To this day I break it into 3 small pieces and he gobbles it up that way! The only heartworm tests he has had was at the age of 1 and 2. |
There are a couple of rescue groups near me that order Heartguard Plus and Comfortis from here: CanadaVet.com saves you more on pet meds The prices are within a couple of dollars of what I currently pay at our vet. |

Thank you all for your advice i ended up breaking the pill up into small pieces and mixed it with her food and she ate it all and i also marked my calander so i dont forget to give it the same day every month |

Heartgard is very safe. I have been using it for many, many years for all different size pups with NO problems with it whatsoever. |
