Experiences with Bilateral Inguinal Hernia in Puppy Hi, I just got my first Yorkie puppy a little over a month ago. I am in absolute love! She was diagnosed yesterday with a Bilateral Inguinal hernia. I noticed a lump on her stomach and took her to the vet. It was undetectable at her puppy exam, but the vet said she was more than likely born with it. I was told it could be repaired surgerically at her time of spay. The vet would like her to be at least 4LBS. She is 31/2 months and 3LBS- so we have to wait to bit, the hernia is not causing her any issues right now. My concern is reoccurence of the hernia. Has anyone experienced this with their baby? Have they reoccured? All experiences welcomed! I've done a lot of reading up on it. I am not returning her or getting rid of her. I would exasperate all my resources for her if I had to, but I'd like to know what to expect after it is repaired. THANKS IN ADVANCE!! |
It's a congenital disease...the breeders, both male & female needs to be contacted & they need to be spayed & neutered. You should look into pet insurance, I think some will cover most of the surgery cost. I do not know how their recovery or recurrence is, but wish all the best to your fur baby. |
Well it is now a pre - existing condition. But if you do have a health guarantee of any worth from your breeder, she/he should cover the cost of the hernia double no less repair. Even though it is going to be repaired with the spay, there will be additional charges. |
my Toots had a hernia had it repaired at spay.... now at 4 years it is just as bad again....so I guess we will have to have surgery again!!!Do not know if this happens often!! |
I did let the breeder know. She swears up and down she has never had one come back with that before and she keeps in touch with most of her baby's owners.. So who knows? I wouldn't breed my baby now, but didn't intend to anyway. My vet gave me a very reasonable price to do all the surgeries though. Any recommendations for pet insurance? I've been looking into it. Deciding between Trupanion and Pet Plan. I know her hernia surgery won't be covered, but would like to insure her in case of other future issues. I'm so sorry her hernia came back darnlora! But at least it wasn't immediate, couple of years later right? Did the vet say why it might have returned? |

The breeder sounds like an unethical greeder back yard breeder! How can she not acknowledge the genetic fault in her line that causes pain to the fur babies which needs major surgery?!:thumbdown The male has the genetic fault also (carries the recessive gene), so these two (the mom & dad of your fur baby) cannot be bred! They both need to be altered! |
What is your source for saying the hernia IS a genetic defect in the dogs parents ? What is your justification for insinuating that the breeder is or was at fault or in some other way negligent ? Dog Hernia | Inguinal Hernia in Dogs | What is a Hernia? | petMD |

Because inguinal hernias can be hereditary, dogs with these hernias should not be bred. |
Why are you bringing up old hernia threads anyway? Are you a hernia expert or something? Then why don't you enlighten me. |
