I think my Mugsy is allergic to the food we r giving him now. Do u know if Wheat and Corn in the dog food can be an allergic reaction for a dog to always itch????? I feed my dog Alpo dog food in small bites. |
I try not to say it about dog foods, but Alpo really is junk. Corn and wheat are common sources of allergies. I'd probably see a vet to rule out any environmental allergies (especially this time of year) but my guess is that if you switch to a higher quality dog food, that would improve your dog's condition. |
What different foods are you looking at? If you're interested in kibble, try to find something that doesn't contain corn/wheat/soy and no animal by-products. Certain grains like rice, oats, barley, millet, etc are fine. I prefer grain-free which is a good option if your dog will tolerate it. We are currently feeding grain-free Fromm (we just finished a bag of the beef frittata veg and switched to the gamebird) in the evenings. Your baby is a cutie! I hope that you're able to figure out the cause of the itching. A change in diet certainly is worth trying and couldn't hurt. |
I think you will see a big difference by switching to a higher quality food. Unfortunately though, you won't find the good foods in the grocery store or Walmart. As was already mentioned, stay away from foods with corn, wheat, soy, by-products, unnamed animal source ingredients, and menadione. Find a food that has a named meat or named meat meal listed as the first ingredient (such as chicken, chicken meal, etc.). When our dogs were younger we fed them Nature's Variety Prairie foods (usually the chicken meal and brown rice formula). They did very well with this food. For your puppy, be sure to use either a puppy formula or an all life stages formula food. |

Tibbe never itched when he was eating Iams Pro-Active, but got ill and really itched when I had him on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal but when the vet changed him to Hill's GI I/D, his scratching all stopped, though it took about a week. |
If you like to shop online there is a great site for dog food. They often have discounts. http://www.mrchewy.com/ I agree that a higher quality dog food would be better and it is not found at the grocery store, Wal-Mart or Target! |

Fromm works chicken in some form into most of their formulas (chicken meal/fat/cartilage etc) and has a lot of ingredients overall in it. Toki currently eats grain-free Fromm but I'm not sure it's the best for a sensitive dog since there are usually several different protein sources. I know that Acana's singles line has a Duck and Bartlett Pear formula that has duck as the single protein source and oats as the single grain source with a shorter ingredient list. Also Blue Buffalo has a Basics line with chicken-free formulas. |
Eukanuba has a lot of grains and corn in it. Corn is an allergen for many dogs. There are a lot of dogs that are allergic to grains also. It is probably going to be a trial and error thing. There are several limited ingredient foods on the market too. Nature's Variety, California Natural, and several others. There are also some single protein formulas available. You can go to a pet food specialty store to see some of the better brands. Petco also carries a few good foods now. |
