Where can I find good treats for my girl? Hi everyone! Can someone tell me what's the best treats to give a 17 week old yorkie? And where would I get them? This is my first yorkie and I'm not sure what's safe. Most of the treats I see at the grocery store or Walmart just appear to be for larger breeds. What are small yorkies allowed to eat? Thanks! |

I give my guys green beans, small carrots, sometimes cooked sweet potato, I boil some chicken (sometimes I just trim a little from chicken I am going to cooik for us) and cut it small for treats. Sugarmamma -- Lisa-- makes great treats. |

Yes, be very careful about big box store treats. Many are made outside of the U.S. and sometimes relabeled. Even stateside companies, Merrick for example, has had some problems with their treats. One company that I have found that makes good treats is Zukes. PM me if you like their web address or other web sites that are pet food oriented that I have come across. Doing own or Lisa, sugarmamma, are good options too. |

Plain Cheerios are a great treat for Yorkies. I used them for potty training and for grooming. I think it took about 10 to get through a bath! I like them because they are small, mostly air and don't fill them up like many treats do, so they won't interfere with nutrition. Also, I've never meant a dog that doesn't love them. As Joey has gotten older, I use thawed frozen green beans and dehydrated liver treats. It's easy to make dehydrated treats in your oven. I've heard lots of people make chicken strips and some make sweet potato strips. |

Treats for tots I feed Blue Buffalo Chicken and rice kibble, and he loves it. I also give Blue B Chicken "Blue Bites" as treats. They are very healthy and about 1 inch square. They are very soft and can be broken into very small pieces. Fairly expensive, but go a long way. My dog will do ANYTHING for these, which by the way I ration and do not feed more than a total of 1 square a day!!! BTW my Vet said Chicken jerky was not good for dogs. Can't remember why, but just a comment. Perhaps they can be sharp and also made in China. |
Your vet was probably talking about the 'shop bought' chicken jerky...very, very different from home-made :) Sally x |
Treats for tots Hi Sally. Yes I am sure u are right, home made (if you know how to do it , and I don't LOL!) would be fine. You can get freeze dried chicken breast which is also good (made in US to USDA rules). I admire those who cook for their pets, then you know it is nutritious and good. Hello from another Brit, who left Southampton many years ago. Don't miss the weather, but I do miss Jersey potatoes, cheese and bacon. LOL! |

Unfortunately, some of the recipes are very unhealthy and you must only give your dog a tiny sample the first time to make sure there is no reaction. I believe that the first year the less variety in food the better. After your Yorkie is a year old, you can branch out, but always keep in mind a Yorkies digestive system is his weak point and many foods might cause diarrhea, so go slowly. In nature, animals don’t really eat a large variety. |

I make all of Ian's treats, that way I know where it's from and what's in it. Besides the homemade ones, I give him raw string beans pieces, sweet potato slices and once a week or so, boiled egg whites. |
treats for tots You are right, we have to be just as careful with home made ingredients and be aware of the delicate constitutions of our little ones. I do feed my baby some veggies and chicken that I cook for us, but depend mainly on the hopefully safe and well balanced kibble and treats. As with human food we have to read the contents carefully and look at the safety history of the manufacturer. YT has helped so much in these and other matters, as Vets do not help much in diet education. |
We use Cloud Star Soft and Chewy Buddy Biscuits. They came out with a grain free variety recently, so that's what we now use. Also use Zuke's. High value rewards are bits of string cheese or plain chicken. |
