Chicken Backs or Necks? Sophie has been on a raw diet for awhile now (we definitely love it!) but it appears we haven't been giving her enough for her teeth because a lot of plaque is beginning to show up on teeth that it never had before. Feeding her something like chicken backs or necks was recommended to us by the people we buy her food from, but we asked on Monday what would be better for her size we have yet to hear back from them. My husband is off tomorrow and we are planning to go to Whole Foods to get something for her to chew on, but I don't know which one is better. I have noticed that some people don't recommend necks for small dogs but others don't think backs are safe for little dogs. Sophie weighs 4lbs so I don't know which is better to feed her. Also, how big should the pieces be that we give her - of whatever we give her? |

I have fed raw chicken necks on occassion with no problems. |
I had a bad experience feeding Joey a chicken neck, he swallowed it whole without really chewing on it and it got stuck. I had to pull it out and it was very nerve racking. I'm not sure what I did wrong, if you are supposed to cut the chicken neck or what? I just wanted you to be aware of this and know if your Yorkie is a gulper. Nobody warned me that this could happen. |

We ended up going to a raw food dog store to ask the question as well. Surprisingly, they also have a yorkie that is Sophie's size and eats raw and they feed him chicken necks. We decided to try them as well as chicken feet (they look so gross). We gave her a neck last night and turns out she isn't a gulper. We held it for her at first and then watched her the rest of the time and we heard the crunching and the chewing. |
