Dry Eye, Surgery or not Abby has dry eye and is getting eye drops twice a day. She's had this pretty much all of her little life. She seems comfortable. Recently her opthamologist retired and I was referred to a new doctor. We went to see him yesterday. Now, her former doc was in no hurry to do surgery. This new one said that I am doing a great job with the eye drops but that I should consider doing the surgery. I am so on the fence about this. Can anyone give me some insight on this? |
What surgery is he proposing? Is the dry eye from a clogged tear duct or is there another reason there are no tears being produced? If this is an issue with the nerve that is invlved in the tear duct functioning correctly, is there a corrective surgery for a nerve problem? I would want all those questions answered. |
I am confused too. My Sammy has dry eye too, but his was caused by surgery. He had a cherry eye and I found out he vet removed the "cherry" instead of repairing it and that caused dry eye . I sure would get a lot more information:) good luck and let us know! |
I know this is basic and you've prob already been doing this for years...but do you give Omegas? I know Omegas are recommended for people and dogs w/ dry eyes. I keep wondering about those Restasis commercials, as in - do they have drops for dogs w/ the same ingredients? I have to use OTC drops for my own dry eyes...there is one called Soothe XP that is supposed to last for 8 hours. What a tough call about surgery. If she seems comfy...I dunno what I'd do either. |
I use GenTeal Eye Drops for me...they seem to last longer than any I have used. I have one of those pups that had parvo years ago...the virus caused the nerve that has something to do with stimulating tear production, to quit working. We tried Cyclosporin (active ingredient in Restasis) but it did not work, so I have to do his eye care daily....I use an insert that is the size of a grain of rice.....Lacrisert....that goes into the space between the lower lid and eye ball...it is a drug that is used in cancer patients....I had seen it used in the hospital and got a script from the cancer doc for my other little Yorkie back in 1980...it lasts 24 hours...slowly dissolves over a 24 hour period, and works hreat! I got this script from my vet after the Cyclosporin failed to trigger the nerve to work again! |
Well, the doctor said that her tear duct just may not be functioning or absent. 6 months ago they did a tear check and she produced some tears from that eye. Those of you familiar with dry eyes know the procedure for checking for tears. The little strip showed 6 or 7 which in itself isn't good but it's a little bit. Yesterday, she didn't produce any tears in that eye :( She is on Pilocarpine, Tacrolimus (sp?) and Genteal Gel. She gets these twice a day. I believe the surgery is called Parotid transposition. I may have to research it. I really don't know what I am going to do. I do know that if she wasn't comfortable, I would surely do something. Thanks so much for all of your input. I really do appreciate it. |
