Toki has done well on formulas that include grains and also does well on grain-free so I switch between formulas. Grain-free formulas are generally higher in protein, fat, and calories but can sometimes be too rich for some dogs. I like that on a grain-free kibble, I can feed her a smaller amount of a higher quality kibble and that she has smaller poos.
I think some people give their dogs cheerios for treats because they're low in calories and fat and they don't make up a very large component of the diet. If it doesn't upset your dog's digestive tract and or a negative impact, use what you'd like.
With that being said, I do try to give Toki mostly grain-free treats and vegetable pieces in addition to a few treats with good grains like brown rice and oats (like Blue Stix) but that's just a personal preference. |
