Help with new puppy changing food please I need some help. I want to feed my new baby a different food than he has been eating. He has been getting a soft food. I would like to switch to Blue. Should I use the canned soft food and gradually change? I hope to feed dry food eventually but Im not really sure how to go about it. I have read that you can mix a little of the new food in at a time. What is the best approach? The food he has been getting is not the best in my opinion and that is why I want to switch. Any help will be appreciated!:animal-pa |
I would just mix in a little bit of the Blue kibble into your puppy's current wet food and gradually increase the kibble amount while decreasing the amount of canned over the course of 7-10 days based on how well your pup is tolerating the transition. |
I think the general consensus is to start transitioning by having a mixture of 25% new and 75% old food and monitor your dog for a couple days before increasing the ratio of new to old food! Which type of Blue kibble were you looking at for your pup? |
Small breed puppy chicken and oatmeal. Is this one that you would choose? I am not really attached to this particular food just want to use one that will be best for my little boy. Thanks for your help! Please share if, with your experience, I should choose another food. |
I had Toki on that exact formula when I first got her and she did really well on it! I currently have her on Fromm's beef frittata for her kibble but have had a good experience with blue buffalo! Toki went through a couple bags of the BB chicken and oatmeal before I switched her to the BB wilderness for puppies (she enjoyed that one too!). I ended up switching brands because I wanted to go with a smaller company but that was just a personal decision. You really just have to pick what works best for your pup through trial and error though since every dog will react differently to certain foods. |

I can honestly say I have never had any issue with changing foods and what I do is just add a new bowl of the new food. I've read where some go through this whole big deal in changing foods but to me, its never been a big deal LOL. No problems. I recently changed to RC from LA and no problems. Just added a new bowl with the new food :) Good luck. It really should not be an issue. |
I always try to switch my pups food slowly but they just pick out the new kibble and leave the old behind! With a new puppy that is switching over from soft food to hard kibble I think I would try a little softened kibble first then cut back on the soaking a little every few days,making sure he's drinking more water. |

My parents just got a yorkie/pom mix puppy and we're currently in the process of transitioning him. The breeder sent him home with a bag of Iams puppy. I picked out the Blue Buffalo Small Breed Puppy Chicken & Oatmeal to start with. I plan on transitioning over a longer period just because I don't know how his stomach will tolerate the change, between that and just coming to a new environment I'm sure he's a little stressed out so I would rather be safe than sorry. Once he's fully transitioned, I'll probably have my parents buy another bag of the same type before possibly trying another formula for a different protein. I'm all about rotating formulas. |
