New food advice needed for Yorkie with health issues I have an 11 yr old male yorkie with atypical cushings, currently being treated with supplements. He has recently developed a heart murmur 3 or 4/6 and was in congestive heart failure. Fortunately our vet has stabilized him with meds for now but recommends a diet change to Science Diet HD, I HATE Science Diet. We currently feed Solid Gold Holistic Blendz but need a food with low sodium and low fat. I'm sure that home cooking would be the best but unfortunately that is not going to be a option. I would greatly appreciate suggestions. I have searched & searched and get more and more confused especially with the recalls. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share. |
Bumping this for you and hoping you get some suggestions :) . Does anyone know of a low sodium / low fat kibble? |
My advice is to find out exactly how much sodium and fat is recommended. Not sure why you hate Science Diet, but I can tell you that their prescription foods have saved a couple of my dogs' lives. You could also consider Royal Canin prescription foods...maybe speak to your vet about theirs? I know you said that home cooking is not an option, but I can tell you that it is easier than you might think. I home cook for one of my very ill pups and she is doing fantastic. If you want to know more, feel free to PM me. A site you might want to read is Welcome to Pet Diets Lots of great information on that site. Best wishes... I hope things go well for your pup. |
Thank you for your words of wisdom. I prefer a more natural food for my yorkies than Science Diet. At one time I had a dog, not a yorkie, on a prescription SD food & found a large dead mouse in the bag. For some reason I can't seem to forget that sight. My vet is aware of this & has given me the list of ingredients & dry matter breakdown of SD H/D as a guide to search for a food with simular sodium content. I will check into Royal Canin if I can't find a natural food. As for home cooking, I know that would be best. For medical reasons, my husband does our cooking & he prefers not to home cook for the dogs. I'm not saying he refuses but he does so many other things that I can't do I hate to add anything else if I can find another food. He loves our Yorkies as much as I do and wants the best for them. I will check out the website you suggested. Thanks again for your advice! |

You might be interested to know that the word "natural" means nothing when it comes to dog food. Quote:

OH good grief, I missed the comment about the dead rat. Good luck in your search. |
