Aackkk...I found a worm. I found a tiny white thing, like a grain of rice, only a little smaller, in my yorkie's stool. He sleeps in my bed! We could both have them. Based on what I'm reading and seeing in google images, he probably has tape worms? I use Hartguard Plus and Frontline Plus, but I don't think either of those prevents tapeworms. I will have to give him a dewormer. I want to take care of this pronto, but the vet doesn't open until Monday. I guess I will need to make an appointment with the doc for myself too. Sheesh. I just dropped $180 at the vet a couple of weeks ago when he had diarrhea. If it isn't one thing it's another. And yes...they checked him for worms, and he was parasite free. In fact, I have never seen either a flea or tick on him at all. I wish I could worm him tonight. They sell a dewormer for dogs at our Tractor Supply store. On the box it says one pill per 22lbs. And it also says it's double scored for exact dosing. I am very tempted to give him half a pill. I don't want him to go all weekend. He weighs about six pounds. |
They get tapeworms from ingesting fleas. You will not get tapeworms from him, so don't worry about an appt with your doctor. You should be able to call your vet for something on Monday. My vet would not make someone make an appt for tapes if they were current on vetting. A stool sample will not always be positive for tapeworms, so I would not worry about that either. Just ask for Drontal or whatever your vet suggests. |
Yes, sounds like tapeworm to me too. Don't deworm him yourself, best to let your vet do it. The tapeworm that dogs get cannot live in a human's system. Mine have had tapeworms many times... I've never had them. I tried to help a friend once, and dewormed his GSD mix and her litter of puppies... All of them died. And I gave the correct dose, the box said the stuff was safe to give to Moms and puppies. Never again. Not worth it. |
Thank you. That's good info. Is there anything I can give him that prevents him from getting tapeworms? |

Mine have both had tapeworms...it is pretty easy to get rid of them with the proper meds from your vet. I took stool samples in and they didn't show anything. But I saw them  I didn't have to take them in, our vet just gave me the medication and the instructions for using it. Mine were both on monthly flea preventative when they got the tapeworms...but they are like goats when we are outside and I think they ingested the fleas from eating grass. |
As I stated above, I use Frontline Plus... Quote:

I believe the vet gave me a dewormer for him once.. I could swear she have me a half a pill to give him. It's usually just one pill, right? And then you follow up a couple of weeks later, with a second pill? |

I took him to the do park a couple of weeks ago... I bet that's where he picked them up. He was doing a whole lot of butt sniffing. |

No worries for yourself as long as you don't swallow a flea.:) I'd wait til the vet can get you something. Some people give dewormers about once every three months on top of heartworm preventative as a precaution. This wouldn't prevent them, but would kill the worms hopefully before they become problematic. Heartworm preventatives don't cover all worms. But also some like the extra protection against hooks and esp. rounds if they have kids. Rounds are not safe around kids. I don't do this, but if I had dogs that played outside extensively, I probably would. |
