Stem Cell Therapy Below is a link to a website that offers this service. I thought I'd post it here, to have it available to our users, who may have a current of future interest in this type of treatment. Vet-Stem Cell Therapy: Arthritis in Dogs & Cats | Tendons, Ligaments & Joints in Horses I did contact this organization to ask if this treatment is available for DLSS. Degenerative Lumbosacral Syndrome; here is the response I received. I do understand that arthritis can affect the spine but in our experience at Vet-Stem when there is arthritis in the spine there is usually additional issues with the spine so the Vet-Stem Therapy is generally not very effective. So we always want to caution pet owners that if the major issue is located in the spine we do not believe the Vet-Stem therapy will be able to help a significant amount. If the spinal issues are minor and the arthritis is in other joints then the Vet-Stem therapy has the potential to help. That is why we suggest having your vet call in for a consultation to see if we think the Vet-Stem therapy would be helpful . |
Excellent ! Thank you for posting the link Gail....this may very well be of enormous help to someone on here, some day.... |
Interesting. |
thanks so much for posting this!!! I did read to see if it would be something for Bailey, not so but it sure could help others!! |
I am going to take some convincing on this. My vet has a brochure from a place in Houston that offers it, but as I read it I just was not ready to try it for my pup. Perhaps when I see and hear about positive results. I saw a thing recently on CNN about a family taking their child to India??? I think. I just did a quick search on CNN.com and cannot find it. Perhaps I will look again later on. Anyway..it was for neuro stuff ....and it seemed that everyone they interviewed was really not getting the results they had hoped for. I need to see results of things before I get too excited about them. |

Thank you for posting this. It would be wonderful if some day someone's baby could benefit from this. I always like hearing about new treatments and will usually follow the stories to see how well people/animals do with them. |

I also like to see positive results before trying any new medicine or treatment. I read and do a lot of research about new medicines and treatments (humans and animals) and I always give them time to prove themselves. I will definitely be following this stem-cell therapy for pets. |
Yes for me too, I started hearing about this oh I guess five or more years ago. Unfortunately so far the only person I know that has actually done this, was for hip dysplasia, one success story, and one "failure". I've not seen any overall success data yet. |
I have read & saw some doctors discussing on CNN, that it can produce multiple tumors at or near the treated site or cause aberrant cell lines. I think I remember they were discussing its use on athletes with worn/torn meniscii or ACL's, I think - can't recall which. One doc was all for it since he said the benefits outweigh the problems & the other was somewhat horrified by that attitude. Both did agree trials should go forward but the more reserved specialist thought successful treatment without high incidence of unintended consequences, some of them several years down the road after treatment, was years & years off, if ever. The other was more optimistic it wouldn't be that long. |
It sounds like the verdict is still out. My sister-in-law has MS and they have a friend who also has MS that works with my brother. Last year, this "friend" traveled to a foreign country (can't remember which one) and had stem cell therapy done. She can now walk and get around. I'm not sure, as of today, how she is doing. My SIL's doctor advised her against having it done. Said it was too experimental. |
Someone just sent this to me and I thought of this thread. This is about Dr. Beale, the orthopedic surgeon I just love here in Houston. He has operated on my pups and many of the Haven pups over the years...his work is amazing. We have had a couple of complicated cases that others said nothing could be done for and he managed to help them! Anyway...this is very interesting: Tiger and black leopard undergo stem cell treatment for pain - Houston weather, traffic, news | FOX 26 | MyFoxHouston |

Stem Cell Therapy - a boarded surgeon's view This Article made it into the Boston Globe today where one of the Angell Animal Medical Center surgeons who performs the therapy has some interesting things to say about it. Notably, she says there is no scientific evidence and she counsels clients to try other modalities first. I'm glad I stumbled across this today as I've been interested in this issue.
