Spicing up food for picky baby Ok. So I feed my dog dry dog food. Amara. I recently tried Acana Pacifica. And when I first got the food she was stoked about it. Now she's just all like blah. This again. So I wanted to try maybe rotation feeding. I thought about rotating between the Acana foods. But when I went to get more samples they only had pacifica. :( Which was a huge bummer. So I got a small 5.5 oz can of Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken(BPA HUGE CONCERN FOR MY BABY) to mix with the Acana Pacifica. Smells delicious to me. But Amara? She ate a little out of bowl and kept it moving. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I want her to be excited at meal time. Like when I cook for myself. Its weird. Like she's gets totally excited when I cook for myself. And the funny thing is she'll eat the food mixture out of my hand but not the bowl!!!! I think it also could be the fact that normally she only gets wet food when she's sick and needs medicine. Or either maybe the change is too sudden and she's unsure and only trust my hands. I don't know. But hopefully. Since the recalls are now out and people are more aware. Maybe I can try the rotation. I don't know. Any suggestions???? |
I used to get cans of Weruva chicken and would put about a teaspoon in Riley's food. He would go nuts! Weruva - People Food for Pets I feed Riley Acana kibble one meal and Frozen Premade raw the other meal. I have a bag of the Acana/Pacifica, right now and I recently bought a bag of the Natures Variety Organic Chicken. He was doing so well on it that I have been feeding him raw both meals. He has environmental allergies and he really thrives on it. |
That sounds awesome. I'm happy you found something that works for your baby. But I have good news. She loved it. I gave her some more time and she was so enthusiastic about eating. She loved it. :) Isn't raw kinda dangerous? Samonella. I thought about feeding raw but I really have no idea about dogs like other experienced owners. |

Nope! I attended two different seminars. One from a Primal raw rep. and one from a Nature's Variety rep. They both do HPP which squeezes out any bad bacteria. The only reason I keep feeding the Acana Kibble is because I travel quite a bit and the kibble is easier to travel with. But when I am home I will feed him raw both meals... or kibble one and raw the other... just depends. |

I had to resort to adding a spoonful of canned food to Sasha's dry kibble because she just refused to eat it plain one day. Has worked wonders ever since I've started it. She greatly looks forward to her meals and scarfs them down. |

I have the same problems with my picky eater. I have tried several things. Currently, I am mixing about 6 little pieces of baked chicken breast into her kibble which is Natures Variety and Fromm mixed with weruva. She doesn't seem to want to eat dry kibble much I give her a little piece of chicken just to get the taste buds going. I also add omega 3 oil, a probiotic and a powder to help break down the plaque on her teeth. I have also tried cottage cheese, pumpkin, yogurt, shredded cheese. I just found this new food called Real Meat Pet Food. It is kind of like softer kibble. I think it is pretty good food. Made in the US from real good US ingredients. I sometimes go nuts figuring out what might entice her to eat. She eats once in the morning and again at night. I also leave dry kibble out all the time just in case, but she hardly every eats much of it. Good luck. |

Yorkies being picky eaters is kind of a Yorkie trait, but they are not going to starve themselves, unless there is something really wrong. Also, I have read a lot about how they don't necessarily need to be fed at the same times everyday. They do comparisons to wolves in the wild and how they basically go make their killings at different times, when they are hungry or ready to eat. |

When Riley started getting picky, I had to do a tough love type of thing... Or, I would sit in the living room and hand feed him. I still do that, "Occasionally".... :) For the Tough Love thing I would keep his kibble down for about 10 minutes. If he did not eat it, I would take it up.... sometimes he would get upset and I would tell him, if he wasn't going to eat it I was going to throw it in the Trash. Of course he understood me!! :D I would then either put it down at a later time or he would let him tell me when he was hungry. Now, I do Nature's Variety raw in the a.m. and Acana kibble at night. With both meals, I usually chop a few green beans, one baby carrot, sprinkle some Cocotherapy Coconut Chips and put a few drops of Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Pet. and mix that around and he is good to go. I do one bag of Acana... right now doing Pacifica. And one bag of NV raw... right now doing Organic chicken. I'm working a little late this evening so I went home at lunch and put some kibble in his bowl.... plain. He ended up gobbling it all up, right before I left to come back to work... Lil Stinker!! :p - I had to put some more down in case he gets hungry, later. |

He didn't need much at all.... I would break it into a few snack bags and freeze them. The store I found it at sold both the larger cans and the smaller cans...... I would add just about 1 Teaspoon with his kibble, when I was feeding Taste of the Wild....just to kind of wet it.... and he would gobble it all down... I was having to add it to get him to eat it.... but I don't necessarily Have to add anything to the Acana... I hope that works for her!! :) |
