Yorkie with H/O complicated UTI + skin allergies I have a 5 year old female yorkie with a history of complicated UTI and struvite bladder stone removal 2 years ago. Her original food was Nutro lamb and rice and then after the original 2 UTI's the vet switched us to a RX Science diet for dogs with UTI problems. The Science diet created Oxalate crystals in the urine so we settled on the Royal Canin SO. She has been on this food x 2 yrs and has only had 2 UTI's in 2 years. We also added 1/4 tablet of craninidine supplement 2 years ago. Now the issue has become seasonal scratchiness that we treat with 6.25mg of benadryl by mouth twice per day and we also give her some fish oil on her breakfast. Most of the year this keeps her in check but when it flares up she can't sleep she's scratching so much. We keep her in a puppy cut and are dilligent in bathing and wiping her paws after she goes outside. Has anyone else had similar issues or solutions suggested by the vet ? I know the primary ingredients in RC SO food is Brewer's rice and corn and those are triggers for allergic reactions and inflammation. |
I've been thru allergies w/ Marcel, and it's tough. My opinion is that once it's affecting their quality of life (keeping them up at night, as it did Marcel), it's great to look into add'l treatment options. If just a certain time of year is really bad for her, then she could be an ideal candidate for seasonal treatment using Temaril P, or steroids. If it's year round...and bad all yr round, then I'd be leaning toward Atopica and/or allergy testing (if you want to give allergy shots). Where is she scratching? Is she chewing/biting/licking her paws? Ears okay? Check her armpits for inflammation (can look like speckly black pattern, not necessarily red in armpits). Any red patches on tummy, inner legs, neck, back etc could be pyoderma (skin infection)...which would need antibiotic. |
She is biting around her front and back paws mostly. We've had her on the Temaril P 2/d x 3d, 1/d x 3 d, then every other day x 3 d twice this year and that has helped tremendously. She does not get any red patches that we've seen. My dilemma is that I feel like the Royal Canin has done a good job at keeping the recurrent UTI from flaring up so frequently but I fear it may not be the healthiest food for her in the long run. I also think it may be contributing to some of her allergies. My debate has been do I try a different type food but closely monitor her urine pH and see if allergy symptoms change and risk a flare up of UTI or more stones, OR just stick with the RC SO and treat the allergy flare ups? |
Have you tried using home cooked food? |
