Never ending heat....
 

Hi everyone. About six weeks ago I posted about Lily bleeding a mere 2 months after her first time being in heat. People wrte back worried that it could be a uterian infection and to have her checked out. After blood tests, ultra sounds, and swabs the vet said she was definately in heat again (uncommon, but not unheard of). So...20 days passes and she's still bleedin, 30 days - all this time I am calling every few days to the vet to see if it's normal FYI it is not, but again not unheard of - after week 5 the vet sent me to a doggie gyno to have her checked out... Again , blood tests, swabs, more blood tests and another ultra sound...results were that Lily is still in the estrous -beginning part- of her heat. After much contemplation and a few calls to other vets she decided to give it another two weeks as her iron levels were good. Two more weeks have passes the heat is still going strong and still no progesterone in the blood- which apparently means no end in sight. The vet said that starting Monday we need to start giving her shots twice daily in order to force her to ovulate so that she can get over the heat and finally get fixed!

Has anyone else out there experienced anything similar...? My husband keeps joking that we got a faulty toy. He's not really as funny as he thinks he is, is he???

Years ago, in the '60's, I had a chihuahua that was getting an injection they had available back then, that kept them from coming in heat. We were giving this little dog this injection, annually for about 5 years...We were about to take her in for her next shot, and she was spotting....the vet said to let her have a cycle because he couldnt give the injection with her spotting....long story short, she ended up hemorrhaging and my baby bled to death.....back then, vets were not giving blood transfusions.....at least none around here!.....she got IV fluid and that was cutting edge technology back then.....but my baby bled out.....I know this is a different causitive factor than what YOU are dealing with, but I get so worried about them bleeding to death with these unnatural heat issues....I will be happy when you can get her fixed and not have to deal with this.....Honestly, I need to research exactly WHY you have to wait until she is "out of heat" before you spay....if she cut loose and started hemorrhaging, they would surely spay....so why not now? I guess as long as all her blood levels are good, she is OK....I just wonder why wait....

During a heat cycle, the blood vessels that supply the ovaries and uterus are engorged. Additionally these tissues are more "friable" (may tear more easily than normal) and bleed more. Even tissue not associated with the reproductive organs - skin, fat, muscle - often seep more than normal during surgery. This often makes a typically elective surgery more stressful than it needs to be, and carries additional risk of bleeding problems during the surgery or post-operatively." Answered my question!

Well that sums it up pretty well. I just hope the shots work and that in another 2 weeks time we will be over this, and making arrangements for spaying her!! I just want to be after all of this already!

Well at least Lily seems happy and healthy. She's lucky she's so darn cute, sweet and lovable!;)

Also wanted to say how sorry I was to hear the story about your chihuahua. It must have been horrible to go through that. Our little fur babies are so small and vulnerable and when something like that happens you just feel so lost and helpless. Now you have your wonderful Yorkie to make you happy.... No experience with this- Just wanted to say I will be sending good thoughts and prayers for the sweet baby- I couldn’t imagine going through that long- Poor girl!! Hope it ends soon!!

Thank you....all these heartaches and illnesses and events and tragedies we and friends experience with our precious pets, are all the building blocks we use to gain knowledge and experience for life with our future babies.....that is how I have to look as these things, and I must admit, I personally have "come a very long way" since back then!
I still have a heavy heart when I think if poor little Cristy had gone thru that today, she would have never died....they have the treatments, blood transfusions, etc., and vet medicine has come such a long, long way....pets are more than just dogs, cats, etc now.....

I hope the shots work. I had my Cali spayed during her heat due to a possible blockage. Sh also needed a liver biopsy for liver shunt testing. I had her spayed at a specialty clinic by a board certified surgeon. The recovery was a little harder but after a few days she was much better. So if you have to have her spayed during a heat make sure the vet is experienced with it.
