Puppy not eating Lola is a 9 week old puppy who will not eat. I have tried everything...baby food, wet food, and even people food. She will occasionally eat peanut butter. Took her to the vet and he says she seems fine and no obvious health problems. I am a b to go out of my mind trying to get this girl to eat. I have never had a small dog before and I am not use to them not eating, plus I worry ab hypoglycemia.....PLEASE HELP!!! |

What age did you get her at? Who is your breeder? Have you talked to your breeder? How much does your pup weigh? What are you feeding her? |
Hi and welcome to yt..sorry i cant be much help, but i bumped this thread in hopes that someone with knowledge can help. i do know 9wks is too young to be away from his mother...12wks is recommended...I hope your little one will be okay... |

Please try to give to give her karo syrup to help her keep her sugar up. I also recommend boiled chicken...Georgie liked it and it encouraged him to eat. Yogurt is another thing he has always loved. It is very important that the puppy eats well and drinks a lot of water. Whatever works, do it. The Karo syrup thing is good advice too. Be vigilant. Hypoglycemia is very dangerous to small puppies. Good luck to you and Lola. |
She needs a bile acid test to see if she has liver shunt. If she wont eat your going to have to syringe feed her or your gonna have hypoglycemia problems. Also did your vet do a fecal and test for parasites> |
We got our puppy at 9 or so weeks from a pet store. (Please don't chastise me, didn't know that was a bad thing at the time). So I'm assuming this is why your puppy is 9wks vs 12wks. When our puppy first came home, was happy go lucky, then wanted to snuggle a lot, then didn't want to eat. Eventually only wanted to sleep and was very lethargic. He wouldn't eat dry or wet food, I gave him Nutrical, which he would lick off fingers. I ended up taking him to a vet hospital at midnight b/c he had a bit of blood in his stool. They tested him for parvo, etc, ended up sending stool out and he had Giardia, which is what lead me to this forum. Keep eye on her stool. The vet gave him a/d canned food, he finally ate that. I took pics of him eating I was so happy. After medicine and treatment, the giardia was gone, but he still is funny about eating. Sometimes still have issues getting him to eat, so I have these freeze dried patties from Stella & Chewy's, he loves them and they have a good rating on dogfoodadvisor.com |
I (THANK GOD!!) have no first hand experience with liver shunts, but I believe the last time I read the updated information on BAT testing, it is recommended to be done at 18-20 weeks of age. |
