I switched my puppy from taste of the wild to Acana Wild Prairie, it's grain free and cost about 7 cents more per pound

i feed my dogs merrick// my 2 older dogs have been on that for the last 5 years with no problems and morgan has been on it for the last year

Max is on Wellness for puppies. Please don't tell me that has been recalled too!!

The Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Large Breed Puppy was recalled.... but I don't think the Wellness for puppies was.

both of mine eat Royal Canin, it is the only one that Jasmine would eat. So that is what Tucker eats also. Both seem to really like it. Both heathly and happy:D

I feed Mckenzie Earthborn Holistics Ocean Fusion. She loves it! She came to me on Nutro and for the longest I feed her that, but all of a sudden she stopped eating it. I can't give her anything where the kibble size is made for small breeds. She swallows it whole and then throws it up later on. :rolleyes: I have to give her the regular size kibble so she has to chew it.

Bella is in the middle of a transition from Wellness Small Breed Puppy to Wellness Small Breed Adult, like her older brother.

However, Toby has been dealing with a case of diarrhea recently and the only thing I can narrow it down to is a new bag of his Wellness Small Breed Adult. Bella's mix is about 50/50 right now but she's not having poop issues, but I can't think of anything else at the moment. Well, after research and finding out about the recall (even though it is for the adult large breed), I'm not taking any chances. I'm returning that Wellness bag tomorrow and either going to look into the Blue Wilderness or now even Royal Canin, since y'all seem to have such luck with it.

what's a mother to do?
 

:(I am so confused at this point. I had my girls on TOTW recently and then when I heard of the recall tried Now! Since a week ago Sophie has had poo "issues" (bloody diarrhea) but not sure what caused it and after 2 vet visits he put her on Hills i/d. Problem is I thought grains were not a good idea and this seems to have a bunch.
To make my life even more confusing Bella gets itchy if she has chicken so I need foods that don't have chicken. I bought a bag of Orijen 6fish but boy oh boy does that stuff stink!! I can hardly stand the smell.
I would hope I can get them both on the same food but I guess we will have to see if we can wean Sophie off the i/d but maybe not.

You can give canned pumpkin that will help firm up loose stools. Not the pumpkin pie filling, but pure pumpkin....

I give it to Riley as a random treat... The can says it is good for 3-days after opened. A friend sent me a can and said that what she does is puts it in a large Sandwich baggie and flattens it out as much as possible. She then breaks pieces off of it. I did the same thing and he just LOVES it!! :thumbup:

My dog has had three cases of bloody diarrhea along with vomiting since feb 2011. The last two cases were this winter. Everything has come back negative so I figure it's food intolerances or allergies. I give her natural balance canned fish and sweet potato. But because of the recalls and the fish being preserved with ethoxyquin (spelling probably wrong) I'm looking to switch her to canine caviar. Mine to doesn't tolerate grains at all or chicken. I also give her animal essentials plant enzymes and probiotics which I feel like has really helped her. Pretty good bowel movements since I put her on it at the end of February and no vomiting. I would def look into plant enzymes and probiotics and grain free limited ingredients. Hope this helps.

I still feed Miles TOTW as my batch was not effected. They ALL seem to be recalled at some point I think. I don't want to keep switching food every week.

I have a bag of the Primal Raw Chicken in the freezer.
I just wanted to put him back on the Acana Kibble and keep him on
just that until I got him completely cleared up. I had to take him by
the vet May 11th and the vet said his ears were very clean, but he gave
me drops because they were still red and inflamed from the allergic reaction.
He is now off of the drops and is completely cleared back up.

I definitely want to start giving him the Primal Raw, again, but I will
never buy a bag of the Lamb again. I am also a little nervous to feed
him the Acana Ranchlands and Grasslands, which both have lamb in
them, although he has had them before.

We change it sometimes: Stella Chewy RAW chicken. Vital Essentials Raw BEEF. Sojos raw turkey. The love it. Have lost a couple pounds. MORE energy than ever. Even my TeddE with CT has improved on this food. We do NOT give ANY treats unless organic apple bits fall on the floor...which they have at one time or another. :)

Yeah, Pedigree is pretty horrible food. It is just good enough to sustain life. I'm glad you found something that works for you. My dogs are chow hounds and will eat just about anything. I tend to rotate their food quite often and they seem to really like the variety.

I Feed My dog Wellness brand dry food and has no problems with it what so ever. Her Coat also looks healthy along with an attractive shine. Hope This Helps!

There are a ton of foods on the market...most of them, I would never give my pups. I am a firm believer that the company is as important, perhaps more important, than the ingredients.
As for calling any food horrible, I will not do that because I have seen pups live on what I think is awful food and actually be very healthy for all intents and purposes. I have a neighbor who feeds his pup something I would not even look at...yet the pup is living outside (something I hate for any pup) and is 14 years old. I don't think he has seen a vet's office much in his entire life. It kind of boggles the mind...and if I look back years ago when everyone I knew was feeding Alpo and their dogs were fine...I dunno....

My uncle had a dog like this. His Husky never saw the vet, she did not get nearly enough exercise, or good food, never went to the vet and lived to be 14. Most would say she was "doing well". However she stunk, her eyes were always running, her coat always dull and dry, her ears smelled, and I spent a lot of time with her as she lived with us for a few years. These were things I noticed that every one attributes to just being normal dog things.

But I also have had lots of family members tell me of their long lived dogs, etc, and it does make you question.... Sometimes, I wonder too, if the dog food back when was less contaminated or processed, or whatever. It was a much smaller market, first of all. 30 years ago, grocery store food like Purina was much better quality than it is today, I think. As food prices have gone up and market more competitive, the dog food companies have started using poorer quality ingredients and more fillers to keep their profit margins the same. You also have to take into account that a lot of dogs were being fed table scraps (and not today's table scraps - back then, they were much better than today's crap) as well as some raw bones occasionally. I know my grandpa remembers always throwing his dog a bone or whatever. My grandma used to give her dog raw meat scraps and stuff. So you have to wonder if that made any difference. Because, I agree, you hear all the time about how long a dog lived, etc.

Then again, you also have to wonder... but how WELL were they doing? A dog "doing well" can mean so many things to different people. I've seen folks say their dog is in great health and doing well... then all I see is an over-weight dog, who smells like dog when you pet them, sheds like insane amounts of fur, has rank nasty breath and disgusting teeth, and can barely take a 10 min walk without passing out. But I think, especially 30-40 years ago, these were just considered normal things... while plenty of dogs were loved and part of the family, it still wasn't like it is today and they weren't necessarily paid as much attention to in certain regards. So I think a lot can depend on genetics, exercise, environment, lifestyle, etc, and it's too hard to say "well this dog ate x food and lived longer than dog who ate y food and had a shorter life" ya know?

I do think a lot of foods ARE a gimmick these days.... but that goes for both "high quality" and "low quality". I don't necessarily think five-six different meats in one food, a gazillion fruits, veggies, etc, is completely necessary. But I also don't think dogs will necessarily thrive on a diet full of corn, wheat, soy, and by products either. I like a happy medium from a trustworthy company, who doesn't use chemicals such as BHT, ethoxquion (sp?), menadione, etc.

I know I am kinda going off topic here... but I am very interested in the subject. As you do wonder what's just a gimmick and what's true. Bottom line is all the pet food companies have a business first and foremost. It's hard to trust who really has their best interest at heart.

I completely agree Brit! We used to feed our dogs Pedigree. Yes, they smelled like dog, had gas, shed like crazy, had horrible breath, but were all otherwise healthy. As I said before, it is good enough to sustain life. There are many companies that make foods that look great when looking at the ingredients list, but the quality of their ingredients and their processing facilities and practices leave a lot to be desired. First a person needs to set a budget, then find the best food/foods they can get within their budget. If that is Pedigree then so be it. I go with a more middle of the road food because I just can't afford the best foods. Right now I am feeding Fromm 4-Star and it is at the very top of my budget. I am also considering trying Hi-Tek Naturals or going back to Nature's Variety Prairie (chicken). The store I buy from feels the quality of the ingredients in NV has gone downhill some since they have expanded their market and moved into the big stores like Petco. It is tough when you want to give your babies better foods than you can afford and you feel like you're compromising or settling for less than they deserve. But the reality is we need to live within our means. Heck, we don't all go buy Prime meats to feed to our family. We buy what we can afford even though we know there is better out there. Do what's right for you, your family, and your pet.

Oh, and sorry for my poor choice of words regarding Pedigree. It is a lower quality food, just like eating cheap hot dogs and french fries all the time. What are the long term effects? Who knows. A lot depends on each individual and how well they tolerate that diet.

I feed my pups Hill's Science Diet Ideal Balance and I will bet that many people feel that is a lower quality food. My choice has nothing to do with my budget. It has to do with what I feel is a safe and good food for my pups with safety being my first thought.
I don't think price is the way to choose a good food. The recent recall list had some expensive dog foods on it.

Give raw model prey-I feel safer now.
I swore by TOTW which was never recalled in CA however in the current climate of everything being safe one day and not the next and having 3 special needs dogs two medically we just can't risk it.

I think you have to feed what your dog does best on. No matter the brand or how much it is- Peanut was on so many foods, Blue Buffalo, Solid Gold, Innova, NV, Wellness, Hills, Natural Balance…. So many over the past 2 years- Each food did something different to him, I was thankful enough to find Acana, He has been on that for 3 years and he has done great on it.

Each dog is different- the key is once you find out what works the best- stay with it.
