Recalls and starting Winston on Home Cooking The recalls once again concern me. Even though the food that I use for my dogs was not included in the recalls, I still feel like all dog food is one recall away. I never wanted to take the risk and always went with home cooking. While I have come to feel that this choice has benefitted my dogs over the years, I really did it for philosophical reasons. It's the only way I can control the ingredients and sources of food my dogs get. With this long term philosophy in mind, I decided to go back to cooking a few days ago. I gave Winston the chicken and pea diet without supplements for his first meal to see if he enjoyed and could tolerate the ingredients, and he did, so today, I visited Welcome to Pet Diets and bought Winston three diets made just for him so that all the ingredients and amounts were set up for his little size. For anyone wanting to home cook (due to recalls or other reasons), for $25 you can buy a diet from this website, if your dog is healthy and an adult. Each additional diet is $12 if you buy the other ones at the same time. I went for three, to give some variety for Winston and to just save on purchasing them. I feel really good about the decision to go back to home cooking. Kibble may have its place, and this recall stuff will play itself out I'm sure, but for the time being, I am going back to home cooking. And yes, my boys do eat all their peas! |
I've been homecooking for mine for several months now and it's amazing how healthy they are. They are like puppies again, bright eyed, playful, not napping so much. Also, all of the issues Moo had with her glands and allergies have stopped :) |

That's very interesting. I'm so glad yours are doing so well on homecooking.:) |
I am so glad that I home cook now! Thanks to you Cathy! I took Cathy's advice and purchased my recipes from Petdiets.com as well. Best thing I ever did!! So glad that Winston will now enjoy the home cooking as well!! |
I am home cooking for ONE only due to medical reasons. I keep thinking about doing it for all of them, but the thought is a bit overwhelming. I feel ok with the commercial food that my pups are on. I changed them quite a few months back because I feared just what is happening with recalls. I feel I made the right choice...at least I pray I did. |
I envy your decision! I wish I could homecook for Jackson but just simply don't have the time, energy or money to do it. But good for you!! :) |
I plan to home cook for Callie after we get moved and settled in. I feel its the only safe way to feed her anymore. What is in our dogs food that they don't legally have to tell us? |
I've always home-cooked for Tatiana. I'm just continuing what her breeder had done. I agree -- it does give me more peace of mind in light of the dog food recalls. Also, I think home-cooking contributes to her health and appearance. |
I home cook for Molly but can't seem to find a supplement that she will eat ... The recipes that you buy do they have them in there? I have 2 books that have home cooked recipes in there but if its caulky or too strong of a taste she will not eat her food. |

The recipes you can buy on www.petdiets.com call for the addition of the Balance It all-in-one supplement. You can purchase Balance It on their website, www.balanceit.com and also purchase recipes there. I like the www.petdiets.com recipes better. One bottle of Balance It lasts me about 5 months for one dog. |

I'm so happy you posted this. Alot of people do home cooking, and have no idea where to start to make sure their dog is getting the right nutrients. If the RAW diet didn't work for Gizmo, home cooking was my next bet. |

Feeding real is not difficult. Just keep the food real, not the processed or canned things and no gravy, seasonings and such. |
I consulted with a vet nutritionist for a home cooked diet for my Cookie. She is thriving and loves her food. :) If I ever decide that I can manage to home cook for all of my pups, it will only be on the advice of a vet nutritionist as I believe that balance of foods and supplements is extremely important in the health of my pups. The site that Dr. Remillard has Welcome to Pet Diets is awesome and her prices are very reasonable. |
