Temp dropping during hypoglycemic episode Well Callie just had a hypoglycemic episode. It has been months sense she has had one so I guess I thought it magically went away. I feel so bad because I though she was depressed and not feeling well because of the antibiotics for her skin infection so I didn't feed her, her dinner at the normal time I do because I didn't want to wake her up. Well I cant believe I didn't think about checking her blood sugar. She woke up sorta and slowly moved to my grandma's lap and was shaking very bad and very cold. I took her temp and it said 96 and then finally thought to check her gums and they we very pale and whitish so I grabbed the nutrical treats I had found and she ate one for me and I got a sweater on her and then feed her another treat and then her dinner. She seemed to warm up and stop shaking and gums started returning to normal color and she got up and was moving around more and went outside to go potty and ran like crazy back in the house so she is feeling better. But I have a question. Her temp has never dropped like that when her sugar has what can cause that? Is it a symptom of hypoglycemia that I do not know about? |
I am so sorry that this happened again to Callie. I was always so afraid when my girls' temperature would drop like that. I hope you can find out what is causing it and that she feels well soon. |
How old is she? Healthy adult dogs should not get hypoglycemic. Maybe she was just chilled? |
yes it is a sypmtom of hypoglycemia! most that come into our clinic for this will have a very low temp. Usually i think the longer they have been like that the lower their temp. And i am sure she isnt just chilled, a chilled dogs temp does not drop down that far ever if there isnt something serious going on!!!! |
You know, that temp did not register with me. I was more focused on the supposed hypoglycemia. You are right, that is VERY low. Probably should visit the EC if she gets that way again. |

This hypo issue in an adult bigger yorkie is interesting. I would still think there is an underlying problem. But if you think your vet has done everything possible to figure it out, then a good step might be talking o a veterinary nutritionist about foods that help keep glucose stable. They might have suggestions. If this happens during the night while everyody is sleeping it would be really dangerous. So i'd keep looking for an answer. |
That's a huge temperature drop. When I wrote my last post, I didn't want to scare you, and I'm not trying to now. A dog's temperature is normally between 101 and 102.5 degrees, so 96 degrees is very low. It happened once with Kiwi where her temperature went down to 97.5, and I knew then that she wasn't going to get better. We had been treating her for congestive heart failure. Please don't think that I mean that Calli is seriously ill but I just think you need to tell your vet about this. It happened to Ashley when she was sick at the age of close to seventeen (it went to 98.5 degrees). My vet told me that it sometimes happens to older dogs. I had a wedding to go to the next day, but I wouldn't leave my baby My husband was home and would have held her the whole time, but I was too scared and needed to take care of Ashley myself. I kept her warm in a blanket and didn't leave her side. You are such a wonderful mom to Callie, and I know you always take such great care of her. I am confident that you will do everything in your power to find out what is causing the hypoglycemia and her drop in temperature. |
