Can't figure out my Yorkiepoo's feeding schedule I have a 6-month-old Yorkiepoo who is a little over 10 lbs. As a younger puppy he had a good routine eating three times per day. I knew as he got older that we would need to eat less often, but his habits have changed greatly and I can't figure him out. Lately he's not interested in breakfast at all. Sometimes he will eat around lunch time, but usually he prefers to wait until later afternoon, and then wants more around dinner time. He loves to chew on a bully stick throughout the day, but other than that we don't do very many treats. He does have a Greenie every evening around 8. Another rather annoying development of late is that he pretty much will not eat unless I watch him. He used to eat on his own with no problem. I don't know if it's a separation thing or a pack thing--he doesn't show any other signs of anxiety when he's gated in the kitchen. We just completed a 5-week obedience class, so I wonder if this is a way of him deferring to me as his leader or something? He seems healthy as ever, so I'm not too worried, but I like to have a nice routine down. What would you suggest? |
I feed mine equal amounts in the morning and at dinner time. I put their food down and then eat. I know I should be feeding them after me but I will not have 4 sets of eyes staring at me while I eat. |
At 6 months old you can skip his lunch time meal. Just give him breakfast and dinner. It sounds like he's a self regulator since he isn't devouring all his food, so if he's good with his potty habits, you can even just leave food down all day and let him eat when he's hungry. |
Thanks for the ideas! He's good about only eating his fill, so it's not a problem if I leave the food down. I guess I'll try that until I can figure out if he has specific times that he prefers eating. This morning he did eat around 10, so I was happy about that. I'll skip lunchtime and give him more at dinner. I think maybe part of the problem was lack of exercise--it's been rainy so we haven't gotten out for our long walks like usual. We had a good walk last night, and he seems to be more settled and into his old schedule. |
morgan is 1 yr old and he eats through out the day// he only eats a small amount at a time |
