7 month old refusing her Science Diet dry food.. Help Please :) I have my pup on science diet toy breed adult food shes 7 months old. and not eating it.. she avoids her food. If hand fed will lick food then spit it out. She was on science diet puppy food till she was spayed in march. And has eaten her toy breed adult food since march until 2 weeks ago. Now we are lucky if she will eat 1/4 of a cup a day she is supposed to have 3/4- 1 1/8 cup a day. Vet says when shes hungry she will eat! Im not buying it. Any food suggestions would be helpful. What shouldIi avoid in dog foods? corn? Shes a Yorkie-poo. Thanks for all suggestions. :animal-pa:animal36 |
No more than these tiny guys eat, have you considered "real" food as opposed to that dry tasteless stuff? It's much healthier for them not to mention how much they love it. ;) |
you might have to go to real food if she won't eat. I have mine on taste of the wild but they get to where they don't eat much...just make sure she is eating something. |
Mine only eat 1/4 cup of kibble a day. Roxy is about 4 pounds and super active- She won't eat more generally. Cozy (16 pounds) and Lucy (9 pounds) on diets should be 10 pounds and 7 pounds. Is she behaving normally otherwise? Maybe she is just not hungry. Has she lost any weight? |
Hey there :) Are you giving her vitamins to supplement? Max loves Nutri-Stat. It comes in a yellow tube and has the consistency of thick honey. Dogs love it!!!! Also, I had Max on Scince Diet at first until I read o here that it has corn, wheat, and by-product which is all bad for our babies. If you dont want to fuss with real food then you could try mixing kibble with some wet food. Max is on Wellness and loves it. I hope this helps! Good luck |
If you don't have other food on hand... I usually try some chicken and rice for a few days, then mix it up with their regular food for a few days till they get their appetite back. Then if they still refuse... I would try another brand. Could she be getting too many treats during the day? |
Parmesan cheese tends to work too. I am just not 100% sure that it would be ok to use it all the time. I was also told chicken broth but again, not sure you would want to do it all the time. I home cook and my girls love it. |

You can try a different food. Most of your dog food stores carry samples of several of the foods they sell that they can give you to try. Maybe she just doesn't care much for her food anymore. There are much better foods out there than Science Diet. Also, at only 7 months old she should still be eating either puppy food or all life stages food. |
I would try a high quality canned food and switching to a different kibble. Good luck! |
Thanks all. |
My pups are on Science Diet Ideal Balance and I have no issues with them not liking it. Maybe you might want to try it. Ideal Balance? Adult Chicken & Brown Rice Dinner - Dry They have a rebate offer here: http://www.hillspet.com/pdf/en-us/IB_rebate.pdf Don't believe all of the negative comments about Hill's Science Diet. They are a very reputable company! They spend a lot of money on research and feeding trials making sure that their foods are good, healthy balanced diets for dogs and cats. I also agree with your vet. Dogs don't starve themselves. I put the food down and if they do not eat it in about 10-15 minutes, I pick it up. Then they wait for the next feeding. They get the message and eat when they are hungry. People worry so much and offer other foods and that is what makes a picky eater. |

thank you ladyjane i will go look right now. |
I would at least try a higher quality food. A little bag will cost you less than $15 bucks. Maybe your pooch is just tired of it. There are numerous brands of premium food that contain higher quality ingredients that science diet. |

I love the fact that SD has their own plant, and seems to have QC under control, but there ARE other options... they are not the only company out there. I do now choose company first but that's not to say ingredient lists are not important either. Though if I had to choose to feed a SD food, Ideal Balance would be it. Though I'm pretty certain Jackson has an intolerance to barley and wheat, as any time he's fed food with it, he tends to get soft poop and goopy eyes, so when I avoid them all stays clear so I couldn't feed it anyways. |
i agree with ladyjane. That's why I never bash what someone is feeding their pets. What may be good for yours may not work for mine. My Kirby had stomach issues and each time the vet placed her on hills science temporarily. I know it worked. I tried to put Khloe on a few "good" foods and they gave her the runs. You probably need to find another food. Khloe ate the hills science while she had tummy issues but after that she lost interest. I did't realize it until I caught Kirby stealing her food. |
Yup, when she is hungry she will eat. If you switch foods during a time when a pup is picky, it reinforces the behavior. But switching once may be ok. She is really too oung to be on an adult food. I'd try Royal Canin. It tends to be very palatable for them. |
Yikes, I missed her age. Sorry about that. |

I just wanted to point out that Hill's is not a bad company and it was in response to the post that bashed Hill's and mentioned only ingredients. |
Hill's Ideal Balance does have a puppy formula: Ideal Balance? Puppy Chicken & Brown Rice Dinner - Dry |
I used to feed Deucy Science Diet...for over 5 years of his 6 year life so far...He was the same way...never really wanting to eat it. One day I actually read the label to see what was in it and OMG! No wonder!!! I've been feeding him Flint River kibble for about a month now and you would not believe the difference!!! He absolutely LOVES it and is finally putting on a little weight. I could always feel his backbone before but NOT NOW!!! I LOVE it! You can order the samples which are 7 packages for 4 dollars and NO shipping to see how your furball likes it. It is made with all HUMAN grade ingredients and they guarantee NO RECALLS ever. It's a miracle food that I'm SO glad I finally found. Of course, I "hammer" Deucy's food until is is like a dust because he tends to not chew and swallow things whole. I can't say enough good things about Flint River food..Just google and see all the reviews, ingredients, etc. |
