Soft stool on a raw diet.. We finally decided to start Sophie on a prepared raw diet and I have a concern about her stools. We did a lot of research and talked to the people in the store and decided on Pets4Life Salmon formula. Canine Salmon - Pets 4 Life Raw Pet Food We chose salmon because it is a protein we know she can handle as her kibble is typically made from salmon. She enjoys it and even though it has only been since Friday night, her eyes haven't been as goopy as they were when she was eating kibble. However, one of the reasons we wanted to make the switch was for the smaller/firmer stools and we are faced with the complete opposite. They are twice as big as they used to be, a pale yellow colour (same colour as the food) and extremely soft. Is this normal for just starting a new diet? They don't stink and she isn't in any pain, they are just soft and big (tmi warning - they are as thick as and as long as her back leg). |
Well, i don't know why this new diet is affecting your dog this way except maybe you switched her too fast . If you are feeding her kibble at the same time that could be the also. Kibble and raw have different digestion rates. Or maybe the salmon formula just does not agree with her. My dog is on natures variety instinct frozen raw. He is doing fabulous on it. His poos are small and firm . My suggestion would be to back off on the raw, maybe give her 1/2 the amount for her morning meal. Then at night give her kibble. Good luck.. |
Thanks for your suggestions. We ended up feeding her less that night and we added a tiny bit of pumpkin. We started out feeding her three quarters of a medallion because half seemed like too little, but as soon as we switched to half her poops have firmed up quite a bit. I am already amazed at the difference in her and she hasn't even eaten raw for a week yet! She has more energy, she has stopped stealing the other dogs' food and one eye that was full of goobers has cleared up and the other is almost clean. |

She probably just needs a little time to adjust to it. I am glad she is doing well on the raw diet. My dog is too and loves it.. |
Some dogs do take a little time to adjust but it sounds like you are doing good now. Mine have never needed any adjustment ... |
