Greenies, dangerous? A news station in our area had this story on last night. I asked my Vet if Greenies were dangerous and she said that they were not dangerous if the dog chewed the treat, only dangerous if they gulped the treat down. Any of you had any experince with Greenie trouble? Simon and Nigel love this treat and it really does keep their eat very clean. Greenies I've read all the debate on Greenies. My "Buddy" loves Greenies and chews them like Gum so I don't worry about them too much. Buddy is a Yorkie/Lhasa mix aged 8 months and 5.7 lbs and I give him the Greenie bits, a few at a time with his food, and he is always monitored while eating them to ensure he is not gulping them. Buddy eats the Greenies first and he doesn't have doggy breath and his teeth are pearly white. |
I'm staying away from them just to be on the safe side. |
My dogs loved greenies but after all the negative things I've heard, I decided to stop buying them. |
It appears the Greenie deaths have made the national news and the maker of Greenies is being sued. I saw the CNN report...and when they showed the vet pulling out that Greenies stuff from their intesines (sp?) I was shocked. My thought is why chance it...like someone else posted I would rather just brush their teeth. The benefits do not out way the negatives in my opinion :eek: And these were bigger dogs they were showing...imagine some of these small yorkies. The thought just scares me. I will not be buying them...too much else to choose from! :) |
I think the greenies issue is one each pet owner needs to make him/herself. I saw the CNN story and when you think of the millions of greenies that are eaten every day, the number of incidents is very small. I have always given Edie greenies. When I became aware of the potenital problems, I began to carefully monitor Edie's greenie-chewing. She only gets one per week. There are dangers all around our little ones. I have a friend whose yorkie ended up in surgery for eating a rubber band! :eek: Since that time, I don't let anything small on the floor. Paper clips, staples, rubber bands, anything can be dangerous, when you think about it. |

I don't feed my Tigger them just because their protein level is outrageously high. 52% which means that if you feed them one once daily you must begin to limit the amount of food intake to make up for the overdose of protein. Either that or feed them a food with really low protein levels. That and they're only 85% digestible. I want to know that whatever my dog is eating is fully digestible and isn't going to affect his food intake amount. I give Tigger Dentagreens which have a protein level of 12% and they seem a little more digestible. Tigger also gets Booda Cornstarch Velvets and Bimples. I love them because Tigger will chew on them for a long time, they excersise his gums and they come in various flavors. The Bimples even come in Spearmint to help freshen breath and clean teeth. And they Crumble which is the best part. |
Greenies, Rawhides I've only given Baby a Greenie once. She was fine with it, but they made her sooooo STICKY!!! I didn't like that. I actually have a few left. I haven't decided it I'm going to give them to her. When the whole "Greenies are dangerous" story came out, a lot of people decided not to give them to their furbabies. Well, it all boils down to your decision. I say this: If you haven't given them to your dog, and she's not "addicted" to them :D , don't bother. Oh, and a lot of people say Rawhide is bad for Yorkies too. Well, Baby loves them. On occasion I give her one. Especially when I need to keep her busy. I watch her like a hawk, and if pieces break off, I throw them out. Hope that helped! :animal36 |
