Allergic to a Tempurpedic mattress? This is the situation: we got a new memory foam mattress (Tempurpedic Cloud) last week. It's in a protective case and we have another mattress pad over the top of that. Being that the mattress is brand new, there is a very slight odor in the room. Both yorkies sleep in bed with us and have started sneezing a lot the past few days. No other symptoms that they would be sick with a cold, like runny nose. They eat well and behave otherwise totally normal. They just sneeze a lot. Is this anything you have ever heard about? I've read about people having allergic reactions to the odor coming from this kind of mattress. Anybody have similar experience? |
I've not researched this for myself, but my acupuncturist recommended against foam mattresses bc of off-gassing... this may explain the sneezing: Mattresses that off-gas can expose you to harmful chemicals while you sleep. Polyurethane foam mattresses release a compound called toluene. In small concentrations, this neurotoxin can cause respiratory difficulties and headaches. Nonlatex mattresses are often treated with PBDEs, or polybrominated diphenyl ethers. These chemicals act as fire retardants. In high enough concentrations, they can disrupt the function of hormones in the body and can have negative effects on fertility. |
When we got new carpet Callie sneezed a bit for a couple of days until the smell wasn't so bad we opened the door and windows. |
I've heard that they may have a strange smell for a few days. Some people suggest taking off the sheets and protective covers and just letting the air get to it. |
