Bone question I got Joel a big bone and was wondering if it's ok and if he's too young for it.(he's 4 months) He loves it, he's been at it for 30 minutes and counting, lol It's a all natural beef bone and theres some meaty stuff he likes eating off it. Here's some pics http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...3/IMAG0934.jpg http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...3/IMAG0938.jpg |
I've heard that bones are bad for dogs. Cooked ones, especially, can chip and the pieces swallowed. They can also chip teeth. Too bad. Mine love them too. I googled and found this FDA link. No Bones About It: Bones Are Unsafe for Your Dog A lot of people buy bully sticks. They're kinda disgusting when you find out what they're made of, but the dogs love them. They're meat, so they don't chip. You can also try nylabones or kongs. Any chew toy should be supervised, though. Hopefully others will weigh in too. I'm no expert. |
Oh bummer, those are the only kind that keeps him occupied, and he loves chewing on all Rosco's big bones also. And ewww about the bully sticks. He does like the edible puppy nylabones, but Rosco eats them before he can, lol. |
Cooked or cut bones are dangerous, but raw bones are perfectly safe as long as they aren't the weight-bearing bones of a big animal, like a cow. My dogs eat slabs of ribs, chicken wings, necks, drumsticks, etc. without a problem. Yorkies might be small, but they are still little wolves and their mouths are designed to chew raw bone. Raw bones = safe  Marrow, soup or dog bones = unsafe :thumbdown Cooked bones = unsafe :thumbdown |
