Do you give rice for an upset tummy?
 
Poor little guy was diagnosed with Giardia today. He got his rabies shot yesterday which triggered major diarrhea. Vet gave us meds but I was wondering if you guys give anything to make their tummy feel better. I know I've heard about rice --how much and does it matter if it's white or brown?

Hi neighbor.:)

50% white rice and 50% boneless skinless chicken breast with fat removed is fine. Slowly transition to regular food in two or three days. The vet can also give you a tummy friendly canned food or kibble if you'd rather not cook.

Poor baby, hope your little guy is doing better soon. Ellie May is correct, white rice and a little boiled skinless chicken are often given when dogs are sick, it’s considered a “bland” diet and easy to digest. White rice is given because it's easier to digest. I've also read that many people have had success with canned pumpkin. It's said to help either way, stop diarrhea, or help with constipation. It has to be regular pumpkin, not the pie filling.

Yes, plain canned pumpkin does a great job with both problems.

Thanks for the quick responses! I asked the vet about food and they said "any canned food will do". Ummmm no.

I gave him the tablet with a little dab of Nutracal and he ate it right up. I still have to give the powder. I figured he would eat that on rice.

Does he normally like rice? I had to give it to Joey once and he wouldn't eat it. When giving medicines, it' good to put it in something they will gobble down.

He's never had rice. We really haven't strayed from his normal Blue Buffalo. I'm betting he would eat any old canned food but worried that it will upset his tummy even more.

I guess I will give him a taste test of the rice first. If he's not into it, I'll come up with plan B for the powder. I'll have to get to the store for the canned pumpkin too.

Vets often have special canned food on hand, I wonder if he meant that? Did he say how long it would take for the meds to work?

I had to give Rylee Belle medicine a couple of weeks ago for stomach issues and I gave it to her in a spoonful of "plain" yogurt! She loves it and it is good for them also! Good luck..........I hope your baby is feeling better soon!!!!

No offer for special canned food. He asked if we fed dry or canned and said to stop and get some canned - any old canned will do.

He said he would be 100% within a few days but the diarrhea might continue for another day or so. As long as he's eating and drinking, not to worry. I had not seen this Dr. before and he didn't not seem to realize how special my little yorkie is. :rolleyes: It was all kind of run-of-the-mill to him.

Bristol is still eating, drinking and playful so I'm trying not to be super stressed about it although it's hard not to worry.

I wonder if he's saying that canned food is easier to digest than kibble? I'm confused. :confused:

I hate it when a vet doesn't seem to want to build a relationship with my dog. You're lucky, it sounds like you caught the Giardia before it had a chance to get really bad.

I feed chicken and white rice when mine have stomach issues. My vet told me to feed that

I steam the chicken in a little water, cool, chop the chicken and refrigerate. When ready to feed -warm slightly,add the cooked rice and let it soak a few minutes- smash into a soft mush and they gobble it down.

Rice would work fine, but in my experience, oatmeal works better (at least with my yorkie Tatiana). The oatmeal I use is the plain, old-fashion oatmeal. I would use the oatmeal as I would rice, and may have to add some extra water, as oatmeal gets thick.

I noticed that Tatiana's stools are more full and firm when I gave her oatmeal instead of rice. Thus, I switched her over to oatmeal.

Thanks for the tip, I've often wondered what I'd give Joey should he become sick, I think he'd like the oatmeal.
