I need to switch Macie's food A few weeks ago, Macie had bone fragments in her tummy and the vet put her on a strict diet. Well, now she refuses to eat her regular food. Wet or dry. Ive tried everything. Ive even tried adding a tiny bit of nutrical in it. I had some Ultra dog food (yea I know that food isnt the greatest) so I tried feeding her that. She gobbled it right up. So now, Im thinking I basically need to change her food to get her to eat. Shes been refusing Canidae for maybe two weeks. I have to basically force her to eat it. I need help deciding which brand to purchase. I really like Canidae, so I was wondering if theres anything else similar to that. |
I am sorry I don't know much about that food. However, I will share what I feed mine. My girls get home cooked meals ( usually rice, chicken, green beans or sweet potato, chicken, carrots :D) But for dry food I use Taste of the Wild. My girls seem to like it. |
I feed my girl Fromms Whitefish and Potatoe and she loves it. They carry other flavors too. Hope this helps. Susan |
The bone fragments probably caused her some tummy distress, and animals nearly always associate the food that they have been eating with the distress. Even a smell from the old food may send distress signals to the brain. I think I would try and find a different food for Macie, I don't know anything about Ultra so I can't comment, but it doesn't sound like you think it's good. I think I'd let her eat it for a few weeks and give her system a chance to heal. Also, it you want to tempt them to eat a new food, Nutri-cal is mainly sugar, it's not strong enough smelling to really tempt them, and they will most likely just lick it off their food. Try sprinkling a little Parmesan cheese on the food that often works, however, I doubt if it will work with her old food, she’s probably associates it with being sick. |
I think Im going to get either Wellness Core or Taste Of The Wild. They both seem like really good foods. I have to determine which one will also help her gain a little weight. |

Taste of the wild has lots of probiotics similar to the canadae (one of the few other foods that my sensitive wheaten terrier can eat!) The pacific stream and the lamb are the two with lower protein %. |
Diamond Foods, just had a recall on their lamb.... Diamond makes Taste of the Wild. Someone posted on here that the store they purchased it at was unable to get the TOTW/Lamb for about 3-weeks and they were wondering if that was why. I made a switch from TOTW to FROMM a couple of weekends ago.....for two reasons. The first is that Riley would not eat the TOTW kibble unless I mixed something in with it. I was mixing about a teaspoon of canned Weruva.... and the second reason was that I started reading about some dogs who were eating TOTW were forming crystals in their urine... I didn't mind mixing the Weruva but when I started reading about that, I decided I would make a change away from Diamond. Riley eats the FROMM with Nothing added to it....which makes me Happy!! I got a bag of the Chicken A La Veg and a bag of the Porkchop & Applesauce. I have also started feeding him Primal Raw again for breakfast, which I used to do several months ago. If I remember to take it out before I leave for work he will also have for dinner, if not, then he will eat the FROMM Kibble. |
I swear it seems like every dry dog food I can get around here and Mikki will eat ends up with a recall. Only the "crap" foods seems to not be. Makes me so mad! I home cook for Rosie but Mikki has to have a dry as well. Honestly, I am to the point I am going to just home cook for both of mine. So sick of the recalls and trying to find a food that works! :thumbdown |
