Diamond Naturals dog food variety recalled I just heard this on my local news Diamond Naturals dog food variety recalled - Friday, April 6, 2012 | 2:11 p.m. - Las Vegas Sun |
Diamond Naturals Dog Food Recall |
Could this be why I have had a hard time finding TOTW in Lamb? The store I buy my food at keeps telling me they have had a hard time getting TOTW in Lamb for about 3 weeks. I just checked two days ago and no one knew why but now I read this about Diamond. Makes me wonder!!!! |
I don't personally trust Diamond at all (and TOTW *is* a Diamond product). |
I made a switch from TOTW to FROMM a couple of weekends ago.....for two reasons. The first is that Riley would not eat the kibble unless I mixed something in with it. I was mixing about a teaspoon of canned Weruva.... and the second reason was that I started reading about some dogs who were eating TOTW were forming crystals in their urine... I didn't mind mixing the Weruva but when I started reading about that, I decided I would make a change away from Diamond. Riley eats the FROMM with Nothing added to it....which makes me Happy!! I got a bag of the Chicken A La Veg and a bag of the Porkchop & Applesauce. I have also started feeding him Primal Raw again for breakfast. If I remember to take it out before I leave for work he will also have for dinner, if not, then he will eat the FROMM Kibble. |

I really LOVE Fromm. I'm pretty sure they are my #1 fav company. The only reason I am not feeding them right now is because the last time we tried, Jax got itchier than usual.... once the food stopped, the itchiness stopped. And he got very runny eyes on Surf and Turf. I think there's just a combo of certain ingredients in their foods that maybe don't agree w/ him (barley, flaxseed, brown and white rice, etc). Just a guess from different trials. But I have a coupon for a free bag and I am going to try their new Gamebird recipe and see if he likes it, he tends to do well on duck and lamb meats. He's doing fantastic on Acana Singles line (duck, and lamb) at the moment though, so not really wanting to change.. doesn't even need the wet food mixed anymore, and his poops have been awesome!! (LOL) but yeah, Fromm is my FAV company and I only wish they offered a more simple formula-food with bigger kibble! Surf n Turf is TEENY and Jax doesn't like it, LOL. Here's the Acana lamb & apple ingredients, and I like that they are very simple, only one protein source, but still high quality and only one grain (oats). Lamb meal, deboned lamb, steel-cut oats, peas, whole apples, whole potato, sunflower oil, oat flakes, lamb liver, sun-cured alfalfa, whole pears, algae meal (source of DHA, EPA), pea fiber, sweet potato, pumpkin, butternut squash, parsnips, carrots, spinach, cranberries, blueberries, kelp, chicory root, juniper berries, angelica root, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, lavender, rosemary, plus premium vitamins and minerals.** ** For a full list of vitamins and minerals, please visit championpetfoods.com GUARANTEED ANALYSIS Crude protein (min.) 25 % Crude fat (min.) 16 % Crude fiber (max.) 4 % Moisture (max.) 10 % Calcium / Phosphorus (min.) 2.2 % / 1.4 % Omega-6 / Omega-3 (min.) 2.5 % / 0.5 % DHA / EPA (min.) 0.2 % / 0.2 % Glucosamine (min.) 700 mg/kg Chondroitin sulfate (min.) 500 mg/kg CALORIE DISTRIBUTION Metabolic Energy is 3505 kcal/kg (421 kcal per 250 ml cup) with 27% of energy from protein, 40% from fat and 33% from fruits, vegetables and steel-cut oats. |

I like the looks of that Acana!! :) |
I like the look of Acana too. I wanted to try a food that has only one source of protein at a time and was looking a the Natural Balance LID (limited ingredient diet) but just read on another threat that Diamonds makes this food. |

He is doing Awesome on it!! |
Well, that pretty much solve my dilemma. My next food purchase will be Fromm.. I am waiting for samples from Natural Balance and TOTW, I guess I'll be chucking them. Thanks for posting this :) |
I have been debating on whether to switch Mr. Picky Butt to Acana. We can't get Fromm's here...our "boutique" pet store had never heard of it, so I ordered it online for Moses, and he wouldn't touch it. So I might try the duck and the lamb and apples. He is eating (well, not really eating) Royal Canin. I switched him to the mini formula and he started itching like crazy, nibbling on his front legs and all. So I wll try the Acana. This is ridiculous that this little baby won't eat...but then my hubby has been sneaking him bits of human food, which is soo bad for him. Now he is pickier than ever! Hmmmph! MEN!! |
Acana and Orijen are another contenders :) Has anyone here fed Nature's Variety? |

I forget why I never fed Nature's Variety kibble.... I have fed Nature's Variety raw though. Riley gets two walks in the city each day and an occasional romp and relay around my place with the ball.... or his hide a squirrel, or something.....but other than that, he is a pretty Mellow Yorkie... He is a cuddle bug or just likes chillin' and watching tv. At his first yearly check-up back in September the vet said he needed to lose about a pound. He told me to add a few green beans to his food.... he said they are zero calorie and basically by the time they finish chewing them, they have burned them off. I bought a mail scale and put him on it every once in a while.... haven't done it in a while. I will do that, first thing in the morning. :D |
We used to feed Nature's Variety Prairie (mostly chicken and brown rice). Never had any issues. One of the main reasons we switched was price after I became unemployed. Now I'm feeding Taste of the Wild and considering trying out Fromm 4-Star foods. |

The place I am buying my food from now sells Fromm and highly recommends it. It's only $3 - $4 more than TOTW for a 15 lb bag. I contacted Fromm and they are sending me a $5 off coupon in the mail to try their food. :) |

Riley would not eat TOTW without me putting a little wet in with it... I would buy the canned Weruva... chicken. He Loves his FROMM. He's been eating it for about 3-weeks now. I do feed Primal Frozen Premade Raw in the mornings and in the evenings, too, if I remember to put it in the fridge before leaving for work otherwise he gobbles up his FROMM. I bought the Four Star Chicken A La Veg and the Four Star Pork & Applesauce. He gobbles up both. :) |
Official Statement from TOTW Official statement from Taste of the Wild Manufacturer: Diamond Pet Foods has temporarily suspended delivery of all dry dog food products made at its Gaston, S.C., plant, including Taste of the Wild. The company took this step because a limited number of batches of its Diamond Natural Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food also produced at the plant did not meet its stringent quality standards. Immediately upon discovering the potential quality issue, the company initiated a voluntary recall of these batches of Diamond Natural Lamb Meal & Rice dry dog food, as announced on April 6. Taste of the Wild formulas are not subject to the April 6 recall and thus can be consumed as usual. Diamond Pet Foods is working around the clock to resume product deliveries to distributors and retailers. However, the company is committed to ensuring that the Gaston plant meets the highest possible standards of quality and will only resume full production when this can be assured. For more information, email us through our website at Taste of the Wild : Contact Us. We will communicate via Facebook as updates are available. |
Thank You I switched a few weeks back cause Princess seemed to be having a allergy to it...after they have been off of it she does not itch like she was... Thank you for sharing I will pass this info on! Thanks again!:aimeeyork |
It seems rather funny that most of the issues I have heard about in the past have been related to the SC plant. I really am concerned about the quality of the Diamond foods though. The place I buy my dog food really tries to discourage foods that are made by Diamond including all the privately owned labels that use Diamond to make their foods, like Canidae, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, etc. They seem to push Fromm, Horizon, and even Precise products. We tried Precise and didn't care for it. The food smelled horrible and was almost nauseating. They also don't make a grain free. We decided we'd never get that again. The Fromm 4-Star foods are not grain free but seem to have fewer grains in them than most grain inclusive foods. I have been thinking of trying a rotation with the different Fromm 4-Star formulas. I like giving my dogs some variety. They get REALLY EXCITED when we get a new bag of food and can't wait to try it out! |
BTW, I'd love to feed Acana, but it is well above the price range I can spend. I was excited to start feeding TOTW but now that I am hearing of recalls and use of low quality ingredients from China I am rethinking that decision. The place I buy my food says their concerns with TOTW are the fact that it's made by Diamond, all the recalls and issues Diamond has had, the higher glycemic index of TOTW, and that Diamond sources a lot of their ingredients from China. This place sells Orijen and Acana and says they are very good, but they really push Horizon and Fromm. The 2 foods they are trying to get me to use are Fromm (4-Star) and Pulsar by Horizon. I haven't found any reviews by people actually feeding Pulsar to their dogs though. They said the Fromm would be an excellent choice so I told them I was going to try that next time around. |

Just switched the boys to Acana Lamb & Apple from TOTW Sierra Lamb.:thumbup: It was $17.99 for the 5 lb bag I got. I think I saw the bigger (15 lb) bag was about $35 or $37. Not sure. But it is cheaper the more you buy. I just can't use it that fast. |

Glad you switched!!  |
