Frontline side effects?
 

Cesar started itching on Monday, which was right on time as it had been about 6 months since the last time he had his frontline dose. Frontline calls for .67ml for a dog up to 22lbs but I do .50ml because he is only about 6 pounds or so.

Anyway, I give him his dosage of Frontline Monday night and the next day I come home and he pooped all over my bed and a few feet from there he had vomited and it looks like he licked it up.

So I take my comforter outside and hose it off and wash it, and I let him outside with me and I watch him.

He has more diarrhea while he's outside and goes twice in the 10 minutes we're out there. I'm thinking he maybe ate something but to my knowledge he did not, just the same blue buffalo he has been eating for months.

So we come in the house and I'm sitting down, and he doesn't let me know or give me any sign, but I hear what sounds like Jeff Daniels toilet scene from Dumb and Dumber. I'm thinking "No way that came from my dog."

I get up and go down by the basement steps to where he is, and sure enough a puddle of poop with no solid to it whatsoever.

So I'm cleaning up more runny poop, meanwhile it is all over his hair and he is roaming the house.

So I give him a bath and hope the worst is over. Well I am awoke at 2am to the horrendous smell of crap once again so I get up to investigate, and I walk right into another puddle of runny crap, and oh yeah the smell was cause it was all over him and he had jumped into bed with me, so now my blanket is dirty once again, his butt is covered in poop, and I have a puddle of it on my floor and on my foot.

So I am cleaning everything at 2am and giving him a bath to clean his behind.

Now today is wed. and once again I come home to a puddle of poop on the floor, but that was earlier in the day.

He hasn't done it again since then, but he has farted constantly and it has the entire house smelling.

I am wondering if this is a side effect of the front line, or if something else is wrong with him.

No changes in demeanor and he does not appear to be sick. He runs, plays, alerts when people are outside, etc... Overall he is his normal self.

I can't take anymore of this poop on my furniture, floor, feet, etc.. WTF is wrong with my dog?

I was also concerned with hydration. Will he replenish himself on his own with water?

I'm pooped. No pun intended.

FYI, in case anybody is wondering, I do put it right on the back of his neck where there is on way he can reach it, so it isn't that he ingested any of the frontline.

With that much diarrhea and 6 pound dog, I would be very concerned about dehydration. Check him gums and tongue to make sure they are moist and pink. Is he lethargic? I would go to the ER if he is, or if his gums are pale and sticky.

If not, do you have Nutri Cal or white Karo syrup on hand? I would have one of those just in case and directions to your nearest doggy ER.

I would call your vet first thing in the morning. This sounds like more than a Frontline reaction.

Not at all lethargic, he does his usual bringing me the rope and fetching it until I stop playing and as we speak he is up and running up and down the hall because somebody has just pulled up.

Also as we speak, I just let him in and found another puddle of poop down on the stairs, so now this is 2 days of straight constant diarrhea.

Also since coming in I notice he has more wet poop on his hair so it's evident he went again outside.

His gums and tongue are good and wet.

He has a lot of energy and is running around but I am not going to be fooled thinking he is ok cause his energy level is up.

I am going to have to take him to to the vet tomorrow now I am getting worried.

Keep a close eye on him tonight and do have the phone number/directions to the ER handy. Definitely call your vet and make an appointment first thing in the morning. Make sure they understand that he has had terrible diarrhea for 48 hours.

Is there any way he could have eaten something that he wasn't supposed to?

Not unless it was something in the backyard.

This last pile was not solid, but it was not as wet as the others.

When I cleaned it up I looked at it on the rag and aside from being runny the only thing that looked out of place was there was grass in it.

Yorkies will eat grass for no reason and it can cause GI upset. They will also eat grass when their bellies are upset.

I would go to the vet tomorrow.

I agree with Maximo. You should take him to the vet especially to check for dehydration. If he's had that much loose stool, it's time for a trip to the vet.

If he's eating grass, could there have been something in the grass, i.e., bunny poop or a frog or lizard? I know we have tons of bunniesc fox and deer. While the deep piles are easy to see, my 2 love to eat the bunny jelly beans as I call them. It's nasty but it's a fact.

I'm about to give Susie her dose of frontline as she usually starts itching around this time so as well as being interested in the outcome of this I hope all is well with your little one, please update us on this?
Also was it frontline normal or frontline combo?

It was just the normal frontline. I have used it on him since I got him and never had this problem. I am not sure if it was even the frontline, I just noticed it after I gave him the dosage of it and read online that diarrhea and vomiting were side effects, among some other things.

Vet isn't open until 9:15.

I was doing some reading and I am thinking I will need to take in a stool sample.

There was more diarrhea on the kitchen floor this morning.

Hope your baby gets to feeling better. Personally, I hate all that stuff that has chemicals. I know it could have been something else, but, I know we put Frontline on Mandy and in less than an hr. she lost control of her back legs. The vet seemed to think the vial had too much med. in it and overdosed her. I have never used it since. That was scary. Will be hoping and praying for your little one.

So I talked to this vet this morning (well the girl who answered) and she said it is common for dogs to get diarrhea once in a while but that I should bring him tomorrow if it persists. She said first I should give him some boiled chicken and rice, so he's been eating that today.

He has not had diarrhea since this morning. I put up his dry food and all he's had so far is a few oz of chicken breast and a handful of rice.

If it continues through tonight I will be taking him in tomorrow afternoon at 2:30.

She said it is probably not from the frontline.

Well I woke up this morning to more diarrhea and a pile of vomit, mostly consisting of the rice he had yesterday.

So I just got back from the vet and his fecal test came back fine, no parasites.

She explained that sometimes dogs get a bug just like people and that is the case with Cesar. I asked why he is still itching even after the frontline and she said it doesn't take effect right away and that it may not be from flea's but he may have an allergy because he's getting to the age where that stuff starts to take effect (he is 2 years, 4 months).

So he was given metronidazole to take twice daily and sucralfate to take 30 minutes before eating.

Hopefully these help give him some relief. I'm just happy to hear that there was nothing wrong with him and that he should be fine once whatever he has goes away.

He weighed a healthy 7 pounds, clean teeth, nice gums, clean ears, good heart rate, temp and lung function, so his physical checked out perfect as well.

He even got complimented on his devilishly handsome looks. Can't disagree with that.

Just thought I'd update you all. He should be back to normal in no time.

Oh wow I hope your little guy is alright. I came here to ask a frontline question. I usually don't give my Cali flea medicine although she is allergic to fleas. Thankfully she rarely gets them. Once I tried and I put a little on her shoulder blade and it made her entire coat slick as if I had sprayed her with a water bottle. It freaked me out so I never did it again. Now last night I noticed a flea on her and she is in torment from the bites. I have some frontline and want to use it but I'm wondering if i need to use the entire packet. She is only 6 pounds and the little green packet just seems like so much.

I am using the correct box for dogs her size, but does anyone else just use half the packet will it be just as effective if I dont use the full thing?
