Choco neutered - Tramadol? Hello all, Choco got neutered and microchipped this Tuesday (@ a little over 6 months) and it was heart-breaking to watch him lethargic on Day 1. I asked the vet to pull out any milk teeth, but it seems that he didn't have any baby teeth dangling. :) I am so relieved to see him recovered and now it's challenging to keep him from running around. Our vet prescribed 1/4 of Tramadol twice a day for the first 5 days. (Choco weighs 3 lbs.) Choco seemed to be in pain on the first day, but since Day 2, it doesn't seem to bother him much. As instructed, I gave him the prescription yesterday, but he got so groggy from drug and slept through the whole day. I skipped it last night since he slept through the entire night. It seems that Tramadol is only painkiller, not the anti-inflammatory, so I'm thinking about cutting Tramadol from Day 3. I am also aware that some vets don't prescribe any painkiller for neuter. Choco is wearing his e-collar, and I'm with him 24 hrs a day to check on him. Any advice on painkiller would be appreciated! (I should also call our vet to ask for his opinion, but it's not always easy to get through the phone at the clinic.) Thank you! |
How many mg are the pills? |
Glad surgery went well, why do you want to cut out the pain medication? Joey was given Torbutrol and he had a hyperactive reaction to it, so they took him off everything and said I could give him baby aspirin on the day after. I would have liked having something that made him sleepy, I think running and playing is the worst thing for them right after this surgery. My guess is your vet will say you can stop the pills any time you like. |
I really believe in giving the pain meds. Just like for humans, when the body is cut open...it really hurts. I don't want them feeling avoidable physical pain. I would give them as the vet prescribed, even if there isn't evident pain...dogs mask pain, so their pain level can be tough to judge. Hope your kiddo snaps back in no time! :) |
When Ralph got that done I gave him the pain meds it was the same kind. I tried not giving it to him but he just slept all day and wouldn't move but with the meds it helped him be himself(: |
Thanks for all your replies! Choco is more active without the meds; once he's drugged, he sleeps all day long. As long as I sit down with him, he won't run around or play wild. My parents are doctors and they generally recommend to minimize the use of painkillers unless necessary, so I wanted to see what your opinions are on cutting Tramadol for Choco. Since dogs can mask pain, I will still give him 1/4 of the pill just once per day and watch him carefully. I just gave him a single dose and he's in sound sleep. I can't wait for him to recover completely and go on a walk again. Thanks again for your advice! |
