Looking For Feedback (long) I have been a loyal follower of Purina especially Proplan but due to the fact they refuse to voluntary recall the poisonous jerky China treats I am going to do a boycott of Nestle Purina. My Zoey is very sick in CRF from these treats. Buddy is on Proplan Performance. The yorkies are on a mixture of Blue Buffalo and Wellness Healthy weight- Vet originally thought my poor Zoey's CRF was genetic. Buddy is getting low on his food but seems okay with the Wellness when he gets into it. He learned how to open the container when I am not looking and he is still hungry. Roxy hates the Wellness and picks the pieces out and drops them on the floor for Buddy to eat. Lucy and Cozy would eat cardboard. Buddy will only eat his kibble with a little something mixed in but loves their food. Zoey is on prescription Purina NF- She won't eat other kidney dog food so I am stuck til I find foods she will eat that the holistic, nutritionist vet can built a home made diet for her around her ever changing preferences. I am starting from scratch basically. I would like to get the yorkies (except Zoey) and Buddy onto the same food. Before Zoey got sick the goal was to get everyone on to Proplan but that is out now. I know my previous Golden, Lucky, could not tolerate Blue Buffalo and Buddy has a very delicate tummy generally so Blue Buffalo is out. I got samples of dog foods- So far only tried TOTW Wetlands everyone seems to like it. The clerk at the store was going on and on about Honest Kitchen. I could easily afford to feed this to the yorkies but not Buddy. I don't mind mixing to feed. Would TOTW Wetland with Honest Kitchen as a topper work? I still need to verify the ingredients are sourced in the US and not China. Both website claim they are made in the US. I would consider almost any American made and sourced US pet food. Actual raw and homemade cooking would be too complicated for me especially right now with Zoey needing so much TLC. Any feedback would be appreciated. Please try to be positive. |
All I can say is I agree with you and stand behind what you are wanting to do. I feed mine Life's Abundance, so I'm not up on the current trends... just trying to keep up with the toxic waste, lol. I haven't kept up with your thread, I'm going there now to catch up... I will keep your little one in my prayers.... |

I feed Royal Canin and mix in a 1/4 cup of Vet's Choice Little Bites. All my group love it, especially the Vets Choice and (knock on wood), no skin/coat/allergic reactions to the food....I add a squirt of fish oil daily....all are healthy, energetic, all annual labs normal, super coats.....I do add a dash (1/8 tsp) of joint powder to everyone's bowl....I can not spend massive amounts of time trying to compile a little of this, a little of that, dash of this, smidge of that....feeding can not monopolize my entire brain.....this formula works for me and my dogs, so I stick to it!....if it aint broke, dont fix it, so I consider feeding a completed deal, and stick to my mixture! I do adjust my females when they are pregnant and feed the Royal Canin Pro Formula for pregnant/lactating females. |
As far as dog food companies go, I really like Champion (Orijen and Acana) and Fromm the best. There's others of course... but those are my personal top two choices, after researching a lot. |

Bumping up :) |
Mika, I usually don't post in the food section at all. But I will say, all my dogs are home fed. It really doesn't take a whole lot of time; particularly if you have a freezer and can freeze one - two wks at a time. If you can get a nutrionist to work with you, after the first few times, it really doesn't take a whole lot of extra fussing. We will make up enough food for 2wks tomorrow, for 2big dogs and one Yorkie. We are talking about each big dog eats about 2lbs per day and of course the Yorkie's measley ~1/2c. 30 lbs of food or so will take us about 3hrs to make up and put into containers and freeze. I tend to roast the veges, and I do cook the meat. So the stove does the bulk of the work. I just scrape the carrots, and wash potatoes, Idon't peel all the veges as the skin is nutrient dense. I personally gave up on kibble, when my big male after 12mths old, starting getting serious diarrhea. I tried 4 different kinds of very high quality kibble, and it was the same, he was fine for 2-3 wks on it, then whamoo, serious diarrhea. I usually feed grain free and no corn in their homemade food. |
