My pup is bored with his food, need new recommendations! I know this is already asked and is already over this forum but I'll ask here for a quick answer. My yorkie is 6mo old and when I first got him, I was feeding him Wellness puppy for small breeds. He would be the happiest puppy and get so excited to see and eat his food, he would eat the whole thing in less than a minute. Recently, he is less than excited to eat his food, and in fact, he doesn't even touch it. We feed him on a timely schedule and we don't spoil him much with human food, just a couple treats here and there. I went out to try new food. Bought a bag of Natural Balance puppy foods and mixed it in with the Wellness. Same result. I tried NB only, and he doesn't touch it unless I hand feed it to him, which I never had to do before. What I have done right now is I have a bag of Wellness treats. I grab one piece and break it up into tiny, tiny pieces and mix it into his Wellness/NB mix and he eats it up real quick. I'm assuming Wellness and NB tastes similar and it isn't tasty to him anymore. He gets no diarrhea or soft stool so the food is treating him well. He just doesn't enjoy eating it anymore. I want to feed him healthy foods and I don't want to resort to cheaper alternatives for tastier foods. Any suggestions that are super healthy, but also delicious? I looked at Blue Buffalo, but it seems kind of pricey, much more so than Wellness and NB. Thanks |
Have you tried mixing veggies or a high quality wet food into the food. My Yorkies will eat the kibbles plan but my rescued golden, Buddy, won't eat plan kibble but will happily eat if I mix heaping tablespoon of wet food and water. |
Yorkies are prone to being picky eaters. I must have gone through at least 10 different foods when Sasha had turned a year old just trying to find a food that she seemed to enjoy to eat. She's my first yorkie so I would freak out if she wouldn't touch her food. Finally, I decided to just pick a food, stick with it and if she ate it when I put it down, great. If she didn't, after 15 minutes I would pick it up and wait until her next meal. I chose Blue Buffalo Wilderness and lucky for me she absolutely loves the food. Its been at least 3 years now and she still really enjoys it. Recently, I've had to add about a spoonful of rice to it because she started turning her nose up to it again and had been throwing up some bile. She gets premade raw in the morning and apparently the kibble must not be as good tasting as the raw lol. |
My silky pack after yeas of eating the Natures Variety rotation, now they are showing signs of being bored with it, all 4 of them, so I am introducing Blue Buffalo to the mix, I am slowly switching them to blue, I figure when they get tired of blue I go back to Natures variety.. and vice versa..LOL good luck in your search.. |
I have been having the same problem with Moses since day 1. Tonight I picked up two flavors of Acana. Mixed the duck flavor with his wet food. He ate it all. Since he refused breakfast and had a play day at daycare, I gave him a few more kibbles of the Acana, and he ate it. I am not holding my breath, though... |

Blue wilderness What kind of Blue Wilderness do 4 mth old yorkies need? Is there one for puppies specifically? Is there a flavor that is more popular with your yorkie? Thanks for the info |
Have you tried a raw diet like the prey model diet? My dogs haven't been picky, sickly or finicky about any of the raw food that I give them. I used to struggle with finding the right kibble too, but that was way before we found the raw diet. I'd never go back to anything else. This is the easiest, most affordable, healthiest, most natural and most entertaining diet there is. Check out the Raw Feeding groups on Yahoo and Facebook if you're interested. |
I started my pups off on Wellness just for puppy small breed. It was a little rich for my little girl (she is a drama queen so issues we occasionally have - good thing she is so darn cute!) so I switched them to Royal Canine for Yorkshire Terrier puppy. They both loved it! The bites are nice and small. After a few days, I noticed they were picking out just the Royal Canine - and leaving the wellness all over the floor in the process. Such funny dogs. |
I feed a raw diet as well and mine are all good eaters! |
I feed raw also. Food is gone in 25 seconds. No pickiness here. |
She loved the royal canon puppy!! Yay no more having to mix natural balance can and dry to get her to eat! Thanks |
