good dog food my little toothless can chew Hi, My little yorkie only weighs 5 lbs at 5 yrs old. She came from a breeder and when I got her, a lot of her teeth are gone. She has most of her top teeth except for 3-4. On the bottom she has no teeth in the front except for about 4 back teeth and her canines in front sides. I've been giving her canned Wellness no grain formula. I would like to get her to eat some dry food also, but she won't even try. I mix it with the canned, she picks out the dry and leaves it.. Does anyone have suggestions about getting her to eat dry, if only occasionally. Is it better for their teeth to eat dry food? I have started brushing her teeth every night with CIT toothpaste, and using the CIT oral hygiene spray every night also. The main reason I would like her to use some dry is that I've heard it helps get the tartar scraped off. Is this even true? PLEASE HELP????:confused: |
No it is not true that kibble or dry food is better for teeth, unless the food is VOHC accepted as an oral care product shown to reduce plaque on teeth. I believe genetics plays the biggest role. Daily brushing is great for prevention of periodontal disease, but again, I think it really depends on the dog. Recently, one of my dogs had a dental by a board certified vet dentist and he recommended the use of a water additive called Healthy Mouth. I bought the product but one of my dogs would not accept the taste of it so I had to discontinue it but I would have loved to use it as this could really help as well. |
I don't believe it's true that dry food helps to get rid of tartar. I don't know how it could. I wouldn't worry about trying to get her to eat dry food. I imagine it would be painful for her to try to chew without many teeth. I would just be happy that she's eating the canned food well. Brushing her teeth regularly and keeping her mouth clean will do more good for her teeth than anything else you could do. I'm glad she has a good home now.:) |
Hi welcome to YT! How nice of you to take this dog on, have you had a dental done on her? Maybe she could have some additional problems in her mouth that are causing discomfort? If not then maybe she is just enjoying the mmmmm good food you are spoiling her with! If her mouth is fine, its probably just easier for her because of the lack of teeth! Whats your pups name? |
I also have a semi toothless fellow... I pour boiling water on the dry food and mix in some canned as well... by the next day in the fridge it's mush. i make up about 3 days worth at a time, and add boiling water to warm it up before feeding or put it in the microwave, and stir with my finger to check for hot spots. |
I adopted a 5 1/2 yr and she only 3 teeth left. She was a breeder release to the Rescue Group I adopted her from. She eat's canned food and believe it or not she will eat small bite kibble. You can soak the kibble in hot water to get it mushy and she should be able to eat it. But her just eating canned there is nothing wrong with that at all. |
I have a little 14 1/2 yr. old that I just feed canned. I am afraid of her getting choked so thats all she gets nowdays. She has her teeth but with all her health problems she has a problem eating. She looks like she is gulping her food and we have to hold her plate for her when she eats. I think brushing and keeping their mouth clean is more important than the kibble. My others get kibble mixed with canned. Personally, I would just stick with the canned since she has so little teeth. Good luck. |
If you read the labels on your tinned foods they are not a complete diet. Boil the kettle put some dry food in a bowl, pour enough water to cover, let it soak to wher eyou can mash it with a fork. I have fed more than one toothless wonder this way and they have done very well. |
Nikki my senior has no teeth and he eats canned KD diet for his kidney disease but he also gets kibble and eats pieces of dog biscuits. Since your little guy doesn't seem to want to eat the kibble his teeth may be bothering him. Although I know all of mine prefer canned to kibble if given the choice. |
Have you thought about a raw BARF diet no chewing necessary |
