Neuter Can anyone tell me when I should have my little man Sammy neutered? The vet said 6 months but a groomer told me in florida they now do it at 4 months. He is almost 5 months now. I am very concerned about anesthesia as I read that Yorkies are intolerant to it. Any help would be appreciated.:aimeeyork |

I encourage my "parents" to wait until between 6-8 months old...that is before they get sexually active and the baby teeth that remain can be removed then. Important to have a vet that is familiar with Yorkies and their anesthesia requirements...gas anesthesia, no barbituates, etc. I always insist that my babies have an IV not only through the procedure, but until I get there to pick thm up...I want them "tanked up" with fluid and sugar so that when they get home and dont feel like eating and drinking for 24 hours, they are not dehydrated....and it is common for Yorkies blood sugar to drop from stress of surgery, as well as drop in body temp. |
My dog Teddy was neutered at 6 months old. He had his retained baby teeth removed at the same time. |
I would go with what a vet said who went through years of school over what a groomer would say. |
Early neutering/spaying started a while back only as a means to control pet overpopulation. Prior to that change, it was done after the first heat or when a dog became sexually mature. When neutering/spaying is done, it immediately turns off the hormones in the dog's body, and the hormones are responsible for many, many things that go on during growth. It is also important that it not be done until the pup's growth plates have closed, especially if the pup will be taught any type of agility training or similar activity. Just because it's being done doesn't mean it's the heathiest thing to do. |
I'd follow whatever my vet suggests, especially since these guys are so little |

My little boy was neutered when he was six months and did fantastic. He came home and slept the rest of the day and most of the next. He moved a little slower, but was back to his usual self the next day. They gave him a antibiotic/pain injection when they did the surgery. I had some nutri-cal on hand and gave him a little bit of that throughout the day since he did not feel like eating. |
Sammy neuter Thanks for all your help. Sammy is getting neutered on May 1st. I am very nervous for him. I hope it goes smoothly.:animal-pa |
