Dry Paws? I talked to my Holistic vet today... as many of you know, My Prada had a Paw infection this past weekend, we still dealing with it, I took her to the regular vet and she is on clavamox for 10 days, well, today I also called Dr. Magda my holistic vet and explained to her what happen, and I told her that I been using mushers secret to protect their paws, she told me that that is ok, but they also need a deeper moisturizer in the winter when the heat is on and in the summer, she told me that for the winter months she suggest using coconut oil, massage the paws with it at least 3 times a week, all dogs and breeds benefit from that and can use the antifungal benefits of the coconut oil, and for the harsh hot summer, she recomends a product called BAG Balm, it helps keep the paws in tip top shape. I just ordered the bag balm and I started last night with the coconut oil. |
thanks for the tip! now is the coconut oil something i might find at my local pet store? or is it human grade in a grocery store. i'm going to pick some up after work today :thumbs up |
I used the virgin coconut oil I had , I picked up a jar at my local walmart, I put a bit on their food every couple of days, I had heard of rubbing it in the paws but never did it before, last night after I got home with Prada from the vet, they removed her wrap and her poor paw looked so dry, so i rub a bit on it just for the moisturizing effects of it, I did not know that she was going to highly recomend it today.. :) hugs, |
SOLD! :D sidenote: I wanted to thank you for always posting such helpful tips for newbies like me! i started giving Brew plain, organic, probiotic yogurt about a month ago (got that tip from another one of your informative posts). His skin used have little flakes when i would brush him out, well i think that it's helping! Not to mention he thinks it's a super special secret treat he's getting. As soon as i take that spoon out he drops his toy (which is saying A LOT for my guy);)and i can tell he really enjoys every lick of it ...plus i'm sure it's doing wonders for his digestive system. you are a star! and i'm so happy to have you on this forum!!:excited: |
Bag Balm can be found at any CVS or Walgreens. It comes in a green container. Its great on human feet too!! If you have dry feet, jut put some bag balm on , put some socks on and your feet will be soooo soft in the morning. |
Yes, Bag Balm is a great product, and it's even sold in grocery stores. About the coconut oil, wouldn't they lick it all off, I thought dogs enjoyed the taste, don't think that's as likely with the Bag Balm. Too much licking can cause problems, but I'm just guessing. |
I use Hoof Saver for dog feets... |
i don't know...Brew is a FREAK with lotions. any time i put lotion on my hand or legs his tounge litterally starts licking the air and he desperately tries to lick it off me!! it's hilarious to see, but i'm sure there is wax and other crap in there i don't want him to ingest, so i keep him away. i feel like he is going to lick lick lick any thing i put on there, so i guess it would be better to go with the coconut so that i know it's safe if he ends up soaking up in his tounge rather then little little toes :p |
with the coconut oil she told me to rub the paw until is all absorved by the skin, i asked her that and she said that they would lick the little residue but they will not lick a lot, you have to make sure is rubbed well, with the bag balm she said to do it before bed. I ordered from her practice, I did not know i could find it at walgreens. hugs, |
