suggestions please Good Morning YT'ers! I need to get some weight on my little Bentley....We got him the week before Christmas (5 months old) he weighed 2 1/2 lbs. I haven't had him neutered yet...waiting until he puts on a few lbs...He is probably just over 3 lbs at 8 months old...he is very leggy and skinny...,.can feel all his ribs....I know you are supposed to feel ribs but, he has no meat on his tiny body at all....He is not going to be a big guy....but, I would like to get some meat on his bones...Suggestions would be appreciated Thank you |
More treats! Also, once they get neutered, they do tend to put on some weight. I'd ask my vet when you go to do pre op bloodwork if you should wait or no. |
Has he been checked for worms ? |
my cedric was the same way and now that he is neutered he is bulking up. he got neutered at 9 months 4lbs and is now almost a year. |
Assuming he's current on testing and heartworm preventative, etc., could he just be going through his gangly stage? Does he eat and poop normally? |
Canned dog food |
When I added canned food to my two's diet, they gained weight a bit. Could try that |
I would suggest to work on training him and give lots of treats during the training time. He will enjoy working and will enjoy the treats. |
thank you everyone! Bentley has been getting canned as well as kibble 3 times a day. He does NOT have worms....haven't had his heartworm done yet....bringing all 3 of them soon for that...I'm thinking maybe it's just the gangley stage but, he is SO thin....eats, drinks, sleeps and plays like a little maniac....all the time! LOL...I have been giving him treats everytime he goes on the pad...after baths, nail cutting.,..brushing....just about everything he does good!!! LOL....definitely nothing medical wrong with him...just really thin...My little Lillie has to have teeth work done which is going to cost me half of my arm....when that bill is paid he is going to be neutered...I am a nervous wreck when they have to be put under and where he isn't very big I a waiting another month... |

Have you ever checked out his liver? Sometimes liver shunt babies have trouble putting on weight. I hate to bring this up, but I think I'd want him tested before you add more protein to his diet. I'd definately do a blood panel before you neuter him. There's a recipe called Satin Balls that has been posted here many times. Breeders sometimes use a receipe that's basically hamburger and a few other things to put weight on their studs who are around females in season. The boys are so nervous it's hard for them to eat. Satin Balls Half Recipe -- recommended amount to mix up 5 lbs cheap hamburger (for high fat %) 1/2 large box Total cereal (about 6 cups cereal) 1/2 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 7.5 cups oats) 5 raw eggs 1/2 of 15oz jar wheat germ (about 2 cups) 5 packages Knox unflavored gelatin 5/8 cup vegetable oil (this is pretty close to 2/3 cup) 5/8 cup unsulphered molasses pinch of salt I personally wouldn't use the molasses, it horrible for teeth, I don't think you need the oil either. You may create a monster and they won't want their regular food. I took the recipe from this post. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...tin-balls.html There are many variations of it on the web. |
You already have great suggestions. I'll just add...my furs LOVE peanut butter. I don't give them a lot of it, bc it's fatty...but it's a great little treat and has dense calories. |
Hot Rod was the same way when he was a pup and now he's a pretty solid 5.1 lbs (last vet check a couple of weeks ago). I found some all meat treats at the store and have to actually limit how many I give as he seems to put weight on with them. They are all natural. They are Ziwi treats from Australia. I give the venison. There are a couple of flavors. They are all natural and grain free. Both of mine love it. They come in small strips and I break them in half and each of mine get a half each when I treat with them. I have actually had to stop using only these as Hot Rod seemed to put weight on when I was only giving these. Now I switch between these and some salmon treats. |
thanks again for all the suggestions! He does NOT have worms...as far a liver shunt...wouldn't he have other symptoms? I have kept in touch with the breeder and have a FB friend that is friends with her, we spoke not that long ago and she told me that all her puppies are thin like this but, bulk up as adults... Bentley is NOT a runt...he is very healthy...however he was very small at birth...The breeder didn't think (and according to the charts) he should be 4 lbs...like I said,...he is 8 months old and very leggy...kinda like a gawky teenager... |

If you want him to gain weight because he's leggy, generally, dogs don't gain much weight in their legs, they will gain it in their body and of course, this can be hard on the joints of their legs. I would double check with a vet to see if added weight is a good idea. Your dog may just have long legs, many show breeders love the long legs, a full coat looks really beautiful on the long legs. |
