Gagging or choking sometimes when my dog Mya eats from her doggy bowl she starts choking or something while eating and some of the food come back up. so i hand feed her most times. she is her normal self everyday... playful, full of energy, and is healthy. i dont understand the choking. now that i have been hand feeding her sometimes she doesnt eat from her bowl. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Sometimes dogs eat too fast and this can happen, or with long haired breeds, some of the hair around their mouths can get stuck in their throat and make them gag. If neither of these situations exist... I would discuss it with your vet.. |

It could also be caused by eating out of a bowl that sits too low to the floor. Have you tried those elevated bowl holders that sit about 5 or 6 inches up from the floor? |
i haven't thought about that. her bowl does sit lower to the floor. thanks for mentioning that. im going to check that out. |
Yep, that's true, my yorkie eats like this is the last meal in her life :) after that she starts choking and cagging, but i can't do anything with her, she just seems so hungry :) |
i worry about her becoming overweight. i put her doggy bowl away at night because i caught her after 1 in the morning eating! lol. |

for the past two days i have been letting her eat from the bowl not hand feeding. i filled the bowl. when theres a full bowl it takes her two days to finish it. im not sure of her weight right now but at 11-12 weeks she was 4lbs. the vet said he can tell shes eating well. i asked him if she was overweight because he said she was chunky. he said no. im sure shes at least 5 lbs by now. maybe more. the food i give her is particularly targeted to small breeds. it says it on the bag. before i was thinking maybe was the size of the food making her choke. she has been doing good so far from the bowl. |
It is still important to measure out her food each time. That is the only way to tell exactly how much they've eaten, even when one free feeds. Also, if she's getting more than recommended on the bag, she very well may be eating too much, and may gain too much weight, which can then put undue stress on their joints. Also with dry food, a dog or puppy may gey really hungry and decide to eat too much food, then they get thirsty and take a big drink. The food in their tummies will overexpand with all the water and can create problems and require a visit to the vet, or even surgery. With small breed dogs, it is also important that their carloric intake is spread out throughout the day, again to avoid hypoglycemia. Can you tell, I've been there, done that? Lol! |
