Freezed dried 100% beef liver
 
Ok so I am looking to get some freezed dried liver for my 5 but as i was searching for them i ran across several brands and have never dealt with any so my question is do you use them and if so which brand do you prefer? Also i read that you can give 1-2 pieces to a small dog a day and was wondering what you are giving yours? Thanks

I used this Stewart® Pro-Treat® Beef Liver Treats for Dogs - Treats & Rawhide - Dog - PetSmart during a trick training class, and Joey really loved it. It was the only store bought treat he loved week after week. I bought many things he lost interest in after a while. However, it's very expensive, and I thought overpriced. You can buy beef liver very cheap, about 1-2 dollars a pound. Most grocers have them in their freezer. If you boil it 30 minutes and cut it into one inch squares and bake in 250 over for a few hours until it seems dry, you get a lot of treats for your money. I kept the treats in the freezer and just kept a week’s supply in the fridge. They are nice because you can keep them on you in a bag and they don't spoil if left out all day. Joey absolutely loved them. If you prefer buying some, buy beef liver not chicken liver.

i made a batch recently and mine loved it...of course i didn't know how much is too much so i didn't give it to them daily or much and they started molding after 2 weeks so i had to throw out half the batch...and was reading somewhere and all i kept seeing was freezed dried liver and since it was not cooked it holds more nutrients supposedly. so i was wanting to try them since others have mention them.

do petsmart carry them in store by chance or do you have to order them online? and would 1-2 pieces a day be ok or is that too much in fat?

The Petsmart I went to carried them in the store. There's a lot of debate of raw vs cooked, all I can say, is don't believe everything you read. The freeze dried ones did not look raw at all, they kind of looked like reconstituted sponge. If your dog is not overweight, I'd think one or two pieces a day would be fine, and cooked liver does add lots of nutrition.
By the way, if your's molded after two weeks, you may have not dried them out enough in the oven. Mine have never molded, and I forgot about one jar in the fridge and it was probably in there a year, I threw it out, but they really looked the same.

went i boiled them for about 20 minutes then put them in the oven for 30 minutes to an hour as the recipe i found online stated....so it probably needed to be in there for another 1-2 hours...and i think it actually started molding almost a month lately...i think it's been a while since i made them from my last ad....and i know i made them a week or 2 before bringing Yukio home and i just tossed them yesterday when i noticed white mold growing in some areas...but wow that one piece was in there for a year and still no mold...guess i will have to try again and this time bake them for longer....so does it make it hard being in there so long? like krispy crunchy? mine prefer semi soft treats over the hard ones thanks

You can't really overtake them. I even put a paper towel under them to absorb some of the moisture in the beginning. If you have a convection oven it would be faster, but the idea is to get every bit of moisture out of it. Moisture is what makes food go bad, bacteria need moisture to grow. Mine start as one inch squares and end up as ¼ of an inch squares and yes, they are crunchy. If you want them to be more chewy, don't bake them as long, but keep the bulk of them in the freezer, and just take out a weeks worth at a time. You could even cut them on the diagonal and make a longer thin strip that would be chewier; more like beef jerky.

I make ALL my own treats....never buy treats....I am terrified of giving something to my babies that will kill them....I felt like I was walking through a minefield with all these "freeze dried" things....dogs dying from kidney and liver disease....so I bought a dehydrator and do my own treats....LOVE this liver recipe...safe and no killer chemicals!!! Thanks!!

Since all the issues with the chicken treats from China, I made my own chicken treats, as well as Sweet Potato, Yams and carrots. I slice sprinkle with garlic powder and dried parsley and bake in the oven at 250 degrees for 2 or 3 hours. My 4 love the treats. Will have to make them some of the liver treats, thanks for the recipe.

Dogs should not have garlic in any form, including garlic powder.
It is my understanding that garlic contains a sulfur-containing alkaloid compound which can be toxic to dogs, even in small amounts.

I have made dehydrated chicken treats using fresh parsely and fresh mint that I have finely chopped and added to my freshly ground chicken breast before dehydrating. I do not used dried herbs unless they are organic.

Lots of the recipes on beef liver included garlic powder too, but some of the newer research suggests that it's better to eliminate the garlic, although at one time it was considered beneficial. Best to do without, until more is known.
