So Sonic went to the vet the other day, vet said he is healthy he weighs 5 lbs 2 oz and he said he has a bad leg, I asked him if there was anything I can do before it gets worse he is like no wait till he starts limping.. Can a vet tell if your dog has a bad leg without an x-ray? Sonic is very active he don't show no pain in his leg what so ever, it don't bother him. So if he does have a bad leg is there anything that can be done before it gets worse?.. Just want to see what ya'll think.

Did the vet say luxating patella (the knee ) ? Yes they can tell as the knee will pop out on examination. Did he say what grade it is ? if not I would call & ask. Lots of dogs have LP & some do have to have surgery & some dogs never have a problem with their LP's.

no he didnt say and didn't say what grade, he just said to wait till he starts limping then we will see where to go from there. I just can't bare the thought of him having to go through the pain first before treatment.. Like I said he don't act like it bothers him, he is active always playing and running.

You don't want to put him through the pain of a surgery if he's not going to need it either.....

Hi , i am sorry your baby has a bad leg.
You do need to have him examined again though.
You need to know if it is "luxating patella" and what grade it is.
My shih tzu just went for her exam and vax and i found out she has
luxating patella in both needs. It is a grade 1.
At this point she is not limping and in no pain.
My vet said to keep an eye on it for now.
The best thing is to keep her weight down , feed her a high quality food and i also give her glucoasmine/chondroiton supplements with
hylaronic acid to strengthen and lubricater her joints..
Vet said she may go her whole life with no further problems ...

If its luxating patella you can tell with out an xray and a regular vet can tell if they have it but I would never let my regular vet do any surgery on it I would go to an orthopedic surgeon for that. Did he say why or what was wrong with the leg?

Riley's vet said he has slight luxating patella in both his legs... He also said, not to downplay it but that it is very common in small breeds. Most of them live with it with no problems, ever. But it is good to keep an eye on them for any limping, etc.

The vet needs to tell you what grade the LP is. Sounds like your vet needs to go into more detail.
A vet can palpate the knee to get an idea of the grade and to see if there is a problem-


Peanut has a grade 4 and grade 2- He is on Cosequin daily and he will need surgery on the grade 4 this year- However his grade 4 he limps a lot, on the grade 2 he never limps-

Thanks for the reply guys, I just read in another post where you can have your yorkie do excercises to strenghten up the muscles and about glucoasmine/chondroiton supplements I will work on the excercises and the get the supplements.

KJC your right about the surgery, I was just saying I didn't won't him having pain lol. I will keep you guys posted about his leg..
