Car sick yorkie Hi all, I took my dog in the car yesterday for a longer ride than the other 2 times. This is only her 3rd time in the car. She threw up on the way home. I called the breeder and she said that it is probably car sickness. Just don't feed her for a few hours before she goes in the car. Has anyone else experienced car sickness with their dogs? And if so, what do you do? I mean she has to go in the car to get any where. I have a sports car and it is NOT a smooth ride, so I am sure that isn't helping her. I can't believe that I have a freakin dog that gets car sick!! |
My Peanut was car sick and also has really bad anxiety in the car- Till I got him a car seat! Solved all my problems without having to medicate him :D |
Where did you get the car seat? I looked in Pet Smart but didn't find any. I thought maybe if she could look out the window, she wouldn't get sick. I have this carrier thingie that I put her sherpa bed in and it has a hook that hooks to her harness so she is safe. But she can't see out the window because she is too low down. |
cedric did this not eating before helps but with cedric he prefers to be held and not his carseat, so he still gets sick when in his car seat but not as bad as his first few times in the car. it does get better the more we take him out. |

And my yorkie used to get car sick all the time and I got these calming treats/pills and they really help. They don't really calm her down, but she has never thrown up after giving them to her and she would throw up in the car even if she hadn't eaten and then it was just stomache acid and I felt really bad for her. Good luck! |
Teddy was also car sick the first few times, but then it stopped. I wouldn't worry that much. |
I've had Toby two years and he still gets car sick...........especially if he's eaten before our two hour ride to the country. I took him on short rides (in a car seat) around town and when we go to our place in the country, I give him a Dramamine (1/2 tablet) about two hours before we leave and it seems to work! The vet said Dramamine (non-drowsy formula) is safe to give him. You might try that. I would never take Toby in the car without a car seat. I think it helps give them a little sense of security. Just my thoughts........... |
I ordered that Pet Gear booster in the link and it should be here Friday! Look on Amazon for a low price. I ended up ordering it from Wayfair.com at a very low price. I like that Wayfair has fast/free shipping. Amazon didn't have the charcoal one available to match my vehicle or I would have ordered from there. Petco and Petsmart carry them but they cost much more. Cheaper car seats go by the name of Tagalong or Solvit I think. There is a Snoozer too. Search Amazon for these to get ideas! |

Once you get it, you can put a little blanket in the car seat to make it extra comfy!! I also put my car seat in the middle for extra protecting!! |
My mom's Bichon would get car sick if the window was not creaked open for air exchange. This may help. There are meds you could try too. |
Thanks guys, I ended up ordering the Pet Gear car seat on e-bay. It was the best price I could find. I am taking her in the car tonight for a short ride, so I will see how she does. I am bummed because I want to take her visiting my friends and some of them live close to an hour away. I don't want her puking the whole way and then she will be sick when we get to where we are going. Hopefully, when I get car seat and she can look out window, that might help. I am really against medications for me and for the dog (unless absolutely necessary), so I would be kind of afraid to give her anything. I am hoping that she will "grow" out of the car sickness!! |
Hi,I just found a really good booster car seat in a magazine I get. It has 8 inch deep sides, attaches to car seat, has a sheepskin liner that can be removed and washed. Your little one can sit up high enough to look out the window. You can find this online or get a catalog ordered. It is $19.98 plus shipping. Name of site is www.harrietcarter.com Hope this helps. I'm ordering one for my girl. |
I actually have something that look similar to this, but it doesn't work in my car. I have a sports car with bucket seats and the one that I have attaches the same way, but the ride is even worse because the booster seat is up high and kind of hanging off the car seat. So, I just sit the dog seat on the car seat and attach the straps around the car seat. I ordered a couple of different ones on line and I will see if any of them work in my car. If not, they will have to go back and I will have to try and just get her used to being in the car. |
I ordered this one... Snoozer Luxury Lookout I Pet Car Seat in Pink Microsuede | Wayfair I am hoping it helps the car sickness. She threw up when she was in the closed in carrier and also when she sat on my husbands lap. |
