Good fruits and veggies to use as treats? Hi everyone! I'm about to get my first Yorkie next week (I'm so excited!) and I was wondering if you could give me a list of some fruits and veggies that Yorkies can eat. I know I need to start training my Yorkie as soon as I get her, and part of the training is using treats to praise. There are a lot of treats out there that probably aren't very healthy so I'd like to use mostly fruits and veggies. I also know that there are certain fruits and veggies that can make yorkies sick such as grapes and onions. So if you guys could tell me of certain fruits and veggies that Yorkies like, that would be great! Thank you all! :) |
My girls like carotts, green beans, peas, bananas, and cooked or dehydrated sweet potato. |
Thank you! I'll try those.:) |
Mine really like melon the best. I make celery with fat free peanut butter and they like that also. They arent so crazy about bananas but they will eat peaches. For vegetables they like green beans. They will also eat broccoli but they wont eat raw they must be cooked. They will eat potatoes too I usually cut up into tiny pieces and put some gravy on |
Callie loves banana, apple, strawberry, carrot, sweet potato, peas. I let her try every fruit or veggie that is good for her sometimes she likes it sometimes she hates it lol. |
Shesha loves brocolli, potato, sprouts, pepper and sugar snap peas. She does not like banana but, she does like strawberries. |
Mine love green beans, sweet potatoes, pineapples, apple, and will tolerate carrots but they are not their favorite. |
Jada and Bogie's absolute favorite is green beans. I also let them have tiny bits of banana occasionally. They like carrots, but for some reason when I give them carrots often Jada tends to put on weight. |
Thanks everyone! You've given me lots of great ideas. I basically just wanted to make sure I don't feed my puppy anything that makes her sick. |
Sasha's favorites are carrots and apples. She has also eaten green beans, bananas and sweet potatoes. |
Teddy likes carrots, apples and papaya. I try to feed him as much vegetables as I can, but those are his favorties. |
I prefer not to give a dog too many vegetables. I think one can over-do it (but I don't think there's anything wrong with giving veggies either). Plus Jackson doesn't even digest them. lol. The few times he's had a piece of carrot, or corn, etc, it just comes right back out in his poop so I see no benefit to giving them. He also doesn't like them. lol. |
Joey loves broccoli, green beans and snow peas, I stay away from carrots because my best friend in grade school choked on one, and the doctor said it's one of the few vegetables that won't soften and dissolve, so that scares me, but I know some people will cook them a little and that helps. Don’t forget that even if it “looks” like they aren’t digesting a vegetable, the fiber is good for intestinal health. In the wild, they would eat feathers/ hair and other things they can’t digest at all, but this is still good for the intestines. Cooking also aids in digestion. Most frozen vegetables are parboiled, so thawing them would be enough. |
One of my babies absolutely loves tomatoes. I think it started because I would give her small bits of my pizza so she got meat tasting tomatoes, but not she will beg so much if I am cutting a tomato and barely ever begs any other time. My other baby likes apples a lot and she is super super picky about treats and foods. She will eat the dry dog food, but I have a really hard time finding any treats that she will eat. She has actually been afraid of treats before. So apples and fruits work when we are home, but it is difficult when we are out because fruits aren't always the easiest things to keep in my purse. I just added that to make sure you find a take-a-long food he will like if you plan on spending lots of time out. |
Jack eats just about everything mentioned above - he loves apples, bananas, cooked carrots (he does not like raw carrots), strawberries, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, regular potatoes (again, cooked), celery but I am careful to take the strings out, blueberries and he loves these frozen too! Good luck with your new baby! |
chester loves bananas, green beans and he likes pineapple of all things, I did not think broccoli was a good thing Im not sure |
You won't believe this, but Moses loves smoothies! We make fruit smoothies with some spinach in it and he whines for a tiny taste! Otherwise, the only thing he will eat in the fruit and veggie arena are carrots. He will not eat apples for some reason. I haven't tried bananas, but I will give it a whirl. I feel so much better about some veggies now and then than treats. |
Mine like baby carrots -- the real baby carrots not the full sized ones that they scrub down to nubs. They also love thawed and slightly cooked frozen green beans -- not canned. If you have to use canned, try to use the low sodium. The regular canned veggies are just loaded with sodium. But a handful of blanched frozen green beans will make all of mine happy all day long! They will also eat any type of beans ... but it might be the fact that I am eating them. I had one that loved tomatoes, even the little cherry tomatoes. But not all of mine do. They all love sweet potato, baked, cooled and cut in small pieces. Mine are not big on fruit. I've tried them on all kinds. They will eat bananas but only when it is a competition between them or I am eating one. Anything that I am eating must be good so they will eat it at that time. They'll eat little wedges of apple with peanut butter but I think it is just because of the peanut butter. You don't need much at all, mainly just a tiny smear to flavor the apple a bit. Tried it with celery but they just licked the peanut butter and left the celery. |
Gracie loves fruits and veggies, too but don't over due them or your pup could end up with diarrhea. Dehydrated meat is always a good choice to supplement with the fruit. Stella and Chewy's Carnivore Kisses I feed my dog Stella and Chewy's regular food along with another brand. It's a great quality company and the treats are apparently wonderful! |
Daisy likes most fruits and veg, especially apples and blueberries. In the evening she will come to tell me its time to share our evening apple (no peeling for her though). I used to have a Llasa who loved tomatoes and she would pull them off of the vine and eat them. lol |
Do you guys feed cantaloupes? for some reason my maltese takes a whiff and runs off like it's poison. Other than that they like all fruits but my yorkie and maltese I think love mangoes the most. They can't stop eating it. |
Carrots, apples, banana and even raw spinach. They love edamame (soybeans) and will knock each other over trying to get to whoever has some! |
how's your dog liking veggies, mine won't eat them unless cooked and mixed in with something. I've tried them all, even my friends when they give them to their dogs he refuses, guess he won't cave to peer pressure |
I didn't think you couldn't feed Yorkies bananas. |
