Collapsed Trechea Ok so I posted earlier about my Bella coughing and I took her to the vet and he gave me antibotics and meds for possible kennel cough. The meds are NOT working so I looked up some more stuff on the internet and I'm looking at Collapsed Trechea...she has the same cough as the Yorkies in the videos I have seen. When the vet check her out she was fine ....he said she was healthy...She is only 4 months old..and I'm worried I'm going to have to start spending lots of money on her already!...She is only a baby..and just thinking about her possibly struggling to breath is terrifying... |
Sometimes it takes time for Kennel cough to clear up. Don't go jumping to conclusions just yet. Most pups with CT are treated with medication, so it's not too expensive. Some of the diagnostic tests can be pricey, but now would be the time to get some insurance on her, before a diagnosis is made. |

I agree, KC can take a long time to clear up. Did the vet put his/her hand on your babies throat ? usually this will makle a pup with CT start coughing but it can also cause coughing in a pup with a broncial irritation/infection . Give the meds time to work before you panic. |

Yes he did...he put his hand on her throat and she did a lil cough when he did it but he said that her trachea was fine...maybe I'm just panicking |

She does the coughing mostly at night...seem like she got a hairball in her throat or something...But I hope it isn't CT...my poor baby...I hope its not |
Please if you have not heeded the advice of an earlier poster, get your puppy insurance now!. Go for the Gold or the top of the line insurance coverage, but be aware that many insurers ask you to pay the vet bill up front and then they will re-imburse you. If you are self insuring, then make sure there is enough in that kitty you have already set aside and see if carrying third party insurance makes sense in the first couple of years. |
Don't panic just yet, it takes time to get over Kennel Cough. My Paris had Collapsing trachea. |

Did you call your breeder to let them know? Not sure I agree that ct isn't expensive to treat, I had two dogs that had ct if money wasnt teh issue for me, the same dig with the ct had lp grade 4 and legs perthies needed 2 hip surgeries and two knee surgeries he got before he turned one, when he was 5 when his ct started he was tested at both penn and cornell but he was not a candidate for trachea surgery or I would have had it done. most f the time my dog had an attack he ended up at the er, money was not the issue for me the lack of being able to help him was but the tests the washes the vet visits the oxygen I had at home for him, like I said it wasn't about the money for me but just on his ct issues in the three years he lived with it was thousands of dollars. When he was not in the middle of an attack he was fine for the most part but during an attack we coule be at the vets a few times. I really hope your dog does not have it, it's heartbreaking, a noise I never wanted to hear again, when fife would make that noise it was like a dagger in my heart then he would stop for a few minutes often times I would be so scared to check on him. I can't tell yiu how many times I would drive to the vet saying this is it this is it,,, then we would get to the vet she would make him stable we would go home the next few days he was ok, then a few days after that you never knew he was sick, just hoping the next attack wouldn't happen. My fife has been gone almost two years now, my shaffer almost a year, shaffers came on much worse that fifes did from the start he only had three attacks and I needed to put him out of his misery, where my fife lived for three years with ct and pretty comfortable for most it, he was one spunky little dog... A medical nightmare born Cryptorchid, then his knees hips, then the ct, but I could have 100 dogs and never another that loved me like that little dog did. My shaffer has been gone almost a year not a day goes by that I don't miss either of them,,, a few months ago I got called for a study about ct in yorkies, with stem cells but it was to late for my dogs, but I hope they can figure out a fix, or bad breeders stop it's heartbreaking for the owners and the dogs. Please call your breeder so they stop breeding those parents. |
Also check your dog's mouth, sometimes hair can get stuck inside the mouth and cause coughing/gagging. |
