Leptospirosis Vaccine? Hello, we live in Illinois and my vet recommended that we think about a leptospirosis vaccine? My little guy has some health issues (MVD and calcium oxilate bladder stones) so I dont want to over vaccinate and my vet will not give me a yes or no on whether or not I should do it. Has anyone heard of this or have experience with it? My vet says it is more common in the midwest...any suggestions or thoughts would be great! :D |
One of my dogs has Liver Shunt and MVD and she cannot be vaccinated. Due to the way her liver functions, vaccines are not actuated in the liver as they are supposed to be, so the vaccines don't work. |
Your vet should be giving their recommendation. I think it's needed in certain cases. But personally I would not give it to a liver compromised, mostly indoor dog. |
My dogs have had Lepto in the past but I no longer vaccinate for this despite the incidence in our area. |
I would ask your vet if he knows the incidence of lepto in your area...if he does not, ask him who does, that you need that information to use in your decision. Also, the health of your particular dog must be factored into the equation (see kjc and Ellie May above). I PERSONALLY do not risk it for my dogs, and most vets down here do not push giving it, especially to Yorkies and toy dogs....I had ONE person I sold a baby to, had cautioned her against the vaccine, her vet told her it "was perfectly safe, dont worry"....I had told her if she had a vet that insisted on giving it, to premedicate with Benadryl prior to the vaccination, wait 20 minutes, give the vaccine and wait around the vet office for at least 30 minutes.....she did none of the above, got the vaccine, left the vet office, and before she got out of the parking lot, her baby had an anaphyllactic reaction to the vaccine and they were not able to save her baby. (This baby was in perfect health, no compromised systems at all). You read everything you can on this vaccine, knowledge is power, and YOU are your baby's advocate. |
Thanks for the responses! I was leaning towards not doing it. It's weird my vet will not say what I should do. He is mainly in door I do take him on walks though and it is slightly wooded around where I live. |

In my personal case, my dogs do NOT hunt in woods or marshy fields, they do not drink water from puddles or ditches, and I do not have wild varmine running around....squirrels, raccoons, possums.......and there has not been a case of the disease in my area for over 12 years......I feel safe with my decision NOT to give the vaccine! I have spoken with several people that have opted togive the vaccine, and they have had no problem. I kind of equate it to running red lights....eventually, the law of averages will catch up to you....the risks outweigh the benefits, in MY opinion, for ME and my "kids"! I had read something about how much a loss in income a vet practice realizes if everyone was to vaccinate their animals just with core vaccines and rabies every three years....something like their income would drop from $87,000.00 down to $30,000.00 per year. This is why vets push vaccinations, especially small practices where most of their income is based on annual vaccines and worm checks. |
Goodness isn't their a health reporting agency somewhere that gives incidence by State? I know with the Canadian Veterinary Association they produce charts of where Lepto is. And in S.W. Ontario there is a high incidence. And we do hike and swim in lakes with our pups, so they do get vaccinated. For all my dogs now I split the vaccines, in otherwords have multiple vet visits. Of course it costs more as I get charged seperately for each vet visit for the "office" cost. |

When I go in for vaccines, I split them also, but they know when I come back for another vaccine a month later, unless someone is having a problem, I am in and out, hence no office charge. |
