Diarrhea...Why and what to do???
 

Our 1 1/2 year old yorkie had diarrhea about 4 days ago,(we thought at first it might have been something she picked up and ate while being outside???) then the last few days it started to firm up, yesterday it seemed to almost be back to her regular poop, but last night and this morning she had some more diarrhea, not alot (it's also dark brown and alittle bit like mucus). We have had her on acana highland for most of the year and we have been adding vitamin E, 400 iu, human grade in the gel like pills, we cut into them and squeese the oil in her dry food in the morning and add some yogurt, she has had this every morning for well over a month, so I don't think it's that, but if anyone has any thoughts on the vitamin E, please let us know your thoughts.
Anyway, I'm a bit confused as to why she is suddenly getting diarrhea again and why after it seeming to be going away, it's suddenly back this morning.

Please help.

p.s sometime if we are out of regular natural yogurt, we give her some of our flavoured yogurt with artifical sweetener...is that ok, we haven't been giving it to her these last few days, this morning she just had her dry acana and yet she had a bit of diarrhea about 1/2 hour ago

You should never give artificial sweetners to a dog, some can be deadly. What kind of sweetner was it? If I were you, I'd call the vet. Toxic Dog Treats-What you should know

I think your giving too much vitamin e. The max amount for an adult person to take is 1000 mg. So 400 mg for a tiny dog seems too much. Vitamin e is very good to give and has even been found to be a cancer preventative but it is also fat soluable and if you give too much you can gain weight taking it so I wonder if its causing diahrea

thank you for your responses. Sorry for the delay in my responds. It seemed that after a day of rice things went back to normal. It would seem that she must have gotten into something outside.....as for the yogurt, i made an error, it was natural yogurt, which is what i purchase just for her.

Glad everything is back to normal, but I agree with Chachi, you certainly don't want to give too much Vit E. and that sounds like it's too much, do you know the safe limit for a dog?

Here's what it says on this site: Vitamin E Information from Drugs.com

"Symptoms of a vitamin E overdose may include fatigue, weakness, nausea, headache, blurred vision, flatulence, and diarrhea."

You should talk to your doctor if you experience any of these problems. Your dog can't tell you if he's experiencing the other symptoms, so I hope you take this seriously. All fat soluble vitamins are held in the fat cells of the body and you can get seriously ill from overdosing. Water soluble vitamins, like vit C will not store in the body, you just urinate the excess away so you are in no danger of overdosing, just wasting your money.
